Well, I just finished the film and the production featurette, and I must say that I was entranced with this viewing. The oft-mentioned "drug-taking scenes" are truly horrifying in their realism. While Keitel and Lund do excellent jobs with their characters, for whatever reason (amateurism?) most of the other characters--especially the two girls--seemed poorly acted to me. In a way however, this only enhanced the almost nauseating feeling of realism.
All through the film, I felt the unpleasant truth that, somewhere, in our society, people live in the way the Lieutenant does. Perhaps not in exactly the same ways, but that, like him, their lives seem to be in downward spiral that their actions can only seem to foster. This being said, I was most pleased with the BD itself, especially after reading about the hack job done on the Handmade Films from Image and the parade of Blu-ray + DVD combo packs, I was pleasantly surprised to see a full 1080p AVC transfer, lossless 2.0 audio track, and the DVD extras and commentary on the Blu-ray itself. This is what a $9.99 catalog title should be.
"You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."

I got this back when LGF releases were all 6 bucks a pop at Best Buy. Got this and King of NY. The film is amazing. I actually saw the Herzog version first and was really disappointed, instantly trading it in. But this film was truly something to behold. Amazed it took me as long as it did to see it, but glad I waited as the BD was clearly the way to see it.
