Thanks for the heads-up Pro-B.

Do you have any (informed) opinion at this stage about whether this will have English subtitles?

Years ago, Rene Chateau released a wonderful SDVD of Le Samourai, one of two in their massive catalog (the other one being Claude Autant-Lara's En cas de mahleur, with Jean Gabin and Brigitte Bardot) that was English-friendly. But with Pathe we will have to wait and see

I never saw this film, but is Criterion's DVD faithful to the original presentation, or, like Le cercle rouge, is this an instance where EU releases could be superior?
"You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."

you can see a screenshot comparison at dvdbeaver. Personally, having had both editions, the difference in colour is not drastic as with the EU and criterion releases of Le Cercle Rouge

I have that René Chateau DVD. It was a great transfer at the time but any Blu-ray should be a vast improvement. I do though watch my RC version rather than the Criterion as I prefer the transfer. I think it was my most expensive DVD for many a year too.

I can't see Pathé going with English subs as they have all sorts of agreements about their use of that name (which they don't entirely own) and having that Blu-ray all over the world may ruffle a few legal feathers.

Would be a wonderful buy so fingers crossed we get some sort of release.

I'm really craving this film on Blu ray. Hopefully it is region-free with English subs, as if I need them. I pretty much know this film.

Totally!

And I found the colors on the french release so much truthfull to the source than what Criterion did, too.
(I didn't think I would say that one day )

Let's be honest. This won't have English subs. Those with the means can resort to external sub solutions but they won't be on the disc.

I may buy it anyway without subs if it comes out before Criterion gets to it. Its not like I don't know what is going on in the film.
