Question How can you tell if a blu ray is fake?

I ordered two blu rays (Bolt 3d and Alice 3d) from China and want to know if there is a way of telling if they are fake. Anything specific I should look for

Seller has excellent feedback and guaranteed me that its authentic if not I get a full refund. Not from here btw.

Well first off your player should tell you once you put the disc in? Mine has Blue LED when it is a Blu-ray disc and White LED when it is a SD. And it tells you if it is 480, 720 etc.

As far as if it is a standard 480i disc copied, (Upconverted) to 1080i I guess the PQ would, should tell you.

Stuff from China always makes me wonder. Most bootleg's come from here.

Sure. Check to see if they're from China.

Just kidding. Seriously, though, one thing you could check is whether it's a replicated BD or a BD-R (recordable). A replicated disc is a normal, shiny silver surface on the data side. A BD-R data surface is a dark gray with a purplish or greenish hue.

I bought a fake BD from asia. Chronicles of Narnia. In addition to the packaging, the easiest way to tell its fake?

BITRATES: the PQ bitrates were 8-15, while the bitrates in the reviews/specs of this and other websites were 30-35.

My player has a display on it and on the screen that says BD. Also once you play it, I can hit a menu button and it tells me if its 1080p, 1080i etc.
My player also takes time to load a blu whereas it loads a standard dvd almost instantly.
"If we're about to die anyways, I'd rather die fighting! Come for me Gmork, I am Atreyu!"

"And use some of that cologne Gertrude got you for Christmas."
"Oh do I have to Mother, it smells like ether?"

" I told you 158 times I hate little notes on my pillow. 'We are all out of Corn Flakes F.U.' it took me three hours to realize that F.U. stood for Felix Ungar."

Take it and throw it across the room. If it sticks to the wall?.... then I don't know? But if it breaks then it's cheap anyway so it doesn't matter.
[Show spoiler]
In all seriousness there's a whole slew of things you could do and most of them are listed above in recent posts. You could simply place your finger on the data side, and if the finger print fades away, then you have yourself a BD. Now whether its a BD or BDR, that depends on the hue.

You won't know until you receive them. Of course, the seller will tell you they're legit even if it's a boot; most boots do come from China. Post pics of the discs once you receive them and we can help determine whether they're boots or not.

Why didn't you just order from Amazon?

Or maybe it's just the UK which has them for release by year's end.

Why even bother buying bd movies from China if there is a concern that it could end up being a fake. Buy from a legit local or online retailer.

For the record I have bought a lot of films from Hong Kong and they are great - and all legit (Red Cliff, Accident, Sparrow, Mad Detective). I've found in my own experience that at least for now fake Blus are much harder to come by than fake DVDs from the PRC. Just because it has Hanzi all over the cover doesn't make it fake, just that it comes from China.

That said, I've seen those 3D Blus the OP mentioned breeding all over eBay. My gut tells me that selling that extra kidney to see Depp's pale mug in 3D is a bad idea, and after the holidays a non-exclusive-to-bundling copy will be made readily available.

Some of those people in China are so good at faking Blurays you would have to be a expert to tell the difference.

Not all official discs have a shiny silver back. Several legit blu's have a purplish hue to them.

Push the "select" button and it brings up all the info of the movie while it is playing like length, bitrates, codecs and probably resolution.

No, it does not show resolution. It only shows the audio codec, bitrate, and the time bar.

Does it show Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio or LPCM?
if so ... you should have a Blu-ray.
