France Rififi (Jules Dassin)

Jules Dassin's Du rififi chez les hommes a.k.a Rififi (1955) has received a preliminary release date for the Gallic markets: February 22. Courtesy of Gaumont.

Synopsis:
Quote:
After five years in prison, Tony le Stéphanois meets his dearest friends Jo and the Italian Mario Ferrati and they invite Tony to steal a couple of jewels from the show-window of the famous jewelry Mappin & Webb Ltd, but he declines. Tony finds his former girlfriend Mado, who became the lover of the gangster owner of the night-club L' Âge d' Or Louis Grutter, and he humiliates her, beating on her back and taking her jewels. Then he calls Jo and Mario and proposes a burglary of the safe of the jewelry. They invite the Italian specialist in safes and elegant wolf Cesar to join their team and they plot a perfect heist. They are successful in their plan, but the D. Juan Cesar makes things go wrong when he gives a valuable ring to his mistress.

Always wanted to see this, but tempted to wait for a Criterion BD release...
"You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."

great news!
Dassin is awesome; I have all 5 Criterions releases.
Gaumont is the best, but this might not have English subs because of the Criterion rights.
hopefully it won't be an issue, but I have to admit I'm thinking it will be.

Fingers crossed for English subs.
Still a million bucks shy of being a millionaire...

USA Yet another Blu-Ray NOT available in the U.S.

I can't help but notice the countless little known and classic titles that are readily available in Europe but non-existent in the U.S. including "Rififi". There are even American made films available on Blu-Ray in Europe and not here! (Example "Touch of Evil", soon to be released "Double Indemnity".) Shows the clear appreciation for art and genuine film making that people overseas have and the lack-there-of in the states.

You know, we are exactly saying the same thing in France : you have plenty of classics we don't have, thanks to Criterion, Kino, Blue Underground, and all.

We have some english movies you don't have, but you have for 4 years now The Wages of Fear in a wonderful HD release, while we are still stuggling to have a decent DVD release (and this is one of many).

We could draw the figures : I tried once, and it was showing that, in the end, France and USA were on par. I just want to remind that Gaumont release about 3 films every 2 months, Carlotta one every 2 months, and Aventi 2 or 3 every months (with a quite variable quality). Criterion alone release about 5 movies every month.

Guess the "clear appreciation" isn't that clear.
