I have a feeling that the US version will still be better quality. And I have a feeling that the Dolby Digital 5.1 on the US version will be better than the K&M Dolby TrueHD 7.1!

In its release in 2001, Miramax made several changes that the company felt would make it more marketable to American audiences:

* Since most Americans are unfamiliar with the story of Wong Fei-hung, his name was removed from the title.
* The subtitles were tailored to diminish the political context of the story.
* Some scenes were trimmed to tone down the violence.
* Originally, some fight scenes had been sped up in places through undercranking. The U.S. release slowed these scenes down to a more normal pace.
* Several comedic scenes, particularly ones interspersed in the fight scenes, were removed to give the fights a more serious feel. Although such comedic devices are common in Hong Kong cinema, it was felt they might have seemed odd to an American audience.
* A new soundtrack was composed that emulated the classical score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but in doing so the famous Wong Fei-hung theme was eliminated.
* New sound effects were dubbed for the fighting to make them more realistic (as opposed to the more traditional exaggerated Hong Kong sounds).

# The scenes that are deleted from Miramax's version of the film are not minor. Also, many of the cuts are also made to the fight scenes themselves.

* The English subtitles on the Miramax version of the film are not a direct translation of the Cantonese. Some of those changes include rewording of dialog (i.e., the entire flashback scene for Miss Orchid is reworded to make it seem that Miss Orchid was not a prostitute), changing the names of many of the moves done by the characters (i.e., calling the "No Shadow Kick" a "Shadow Kick"), and adding back story that is never said or spoken about in the Cantonese dialog (Miramax adds an entire back story to Iron Monkey's character about his father getting murdered which only exists in the Miramax subtitles, not in the Cantonese dialog).



# The Miramax version released in the U.S. in 2001 is severely cut from the original Hong Kong version and has the memorable original musical score by Richard Yuen removed and replaced by a new score by James L. Venable. The new score was made to sound similar to the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon score because Miramax hoped that it could cash in on its success.

BTW, one of my favorite 90's HK flicks! One of the best kung fu flicks of all time. To me Iron Monkey is the bible of how to correctly do wire-fu.

I guess AnimeonBlu already said it with the spoiler warning, but there is a huge difference IMO. To create subtitles that don't even match the Cantonese is ridiculous. I will be getting this.

I love Iron Monkey, been waiting for the full version.

That US cut is a joke. Bad enough the story alterations, but continuity goes completely out the window in some scenes.

Hoping for a decent soundtrack, I had both HK Legends releases at one point and the surround mixes on those, were badly done.

doesn't look like it will have the original English dub that was on the MegaStar dvd. Shame, since that was a really bad ass dub.

Glad I didn't buy the crappy Miramax version.

But the K&R blu-ray will have Chinglish subtitles. You would rather have grammatically incorrect, messy subtitles than the Miramax ones? I can't take Chinglish, so I'm gonna stick with the non-matching grammatically correct subs!

If my memory is right, the previous Iron Monkey DVD released by FS used the HKL subs so more likely than not, the blu will retain those subs. I'd like to pop it in and check but I dont have my el cheapo region free philips player anymore.

I have my K20, I might offer a user review sometime during the week. It looks and sounds OK, but I think that is probably the source material. The CG bits look good, so I assume that the film bits are as good as they can be. The DTSHD track is mostly pretty mellow, but when the action comes along, it gets hyper.

Regarding K-20, it's boring as hell and shouldn't have been anywhere near as long as it is...IMO.
