Default Michael Mann's The Insider

Watched this on DVD recently.. the transfer is not very good. A lot of artifacts from the print, it appeared. I loved the cinematography to this movie and would love a high quality transfer to blu-ray and some kick-ass extras. I think this, Ali and Thief (edit: along with The Keep and the Jericho Mile as well as a couple of others, but those aren't even on DVD, so I doubt we'll get them on BR at all) are the only Mann movies to not make the Blu-Ray format, and ultimately, I'd love to have them all on BR, with this one at the top of the list.

But I also hope Mann doesn't decide to tinker with the film as he did with Mohicans. Not exactly comparing apples to apples with these two films, so concern may be a bit unfounded. Mohicans was under constant pressure to get finished by the studio, so it's as if he keeps trying to make the movie he always wanted but could never get. He's altered the film with each new format. On the plus side, he hasn't touched Heat, Collateral or Public Enemies so I'm hopeful this won't be messed with either.

Who's with me?

I'm definitely with you. Great performances from an A-cast and the music score is great too.

Tried to rewatch this on my dvd copy a few weeks ago and the disc decided to give up the ghost, right where Wigand is on his way to make the deposition.

I love it when the Mississippi lawyer fires back at the tabacco lawyer trying to intimidate Wigand with objections. Snatches his balls right off with the geography lesson and "WIPE THAT SMURK OFF YOUR FACE!!"

lol. The premise initially sounded pretty uninteresting, but nothing could have been farther from the truth.. it was acting and scenes like the one you mention that really epitomize how great this movie is at times.

A more recent example that I thought the exact same way about prior to seeing it? The social network. That one surprised me in the exact same way.

I'm sure its probably a compelling movie, but I've made a commitment to myself to not see "The Social Network".

The whole facebook-myspace-twitter-crackberry-iphone/pad thing that leads to everybody being up everybody's ass all the time disgusts me more than it probably should...

Amen. Mike Wallace's death reminded me about it as well.

For some reason, this made me think of an interview I saw of Michael Mann talking about how everyone working on the movie quit smoking during the making of this film.

Cut to ten years later and Russell Crowe is being interviewed on 60 minutes, and smoking during the interview. I was surprised they didn't bring this movie up to him during the interview.
