Default 61* and When it was a Game - June 7, 2011

61* Blu-ray

Quote:
In the summer of 1961, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle took on Babe Ruth's record, the 1927 single-season 60 home run slam. It would be a summer that no one who knows baseball would forget. Mickey Mantle is a Yankee favorite, a hit with fans and sports writers alike and natural heir to his predecessors Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth. Also at bat is a yound midwesterner, Roger Maris, ahard-hitting right fielder. Maris is Mantle's opposite in almost every way. Quiet and soft-spoken, he doesn't add up to everything a sports legend should be, and finds himself losing the support of the fans. As the summer of 1961 unfolds, both find themselves approaching Babe Ruth's benchmark of 60 home runs. Facing mounting pressure from the media and the stands, they both know there's only room for one winner.

I'm in for both. Even my Yankee hate couldn't dampen my liking for 61.

Well said. It is a little seen gem of a film that is vastly underrated. I cannot wait to add 61* to my Blu-ray library.

Correct.

I live in Fargo, ND which the birthplace of Roger Maris. Every year they have a golf tourny in his memory. Couple of years ago, Billy Crystal, Barry Pepper and some other cast members along with Bob Costas and had a special showing in Fargo. It was awesome.
I'm just your average stuck up, half witted, scruffy looking nerf hearder.

61* is a brilliant film, only slightly blemished in one spot when the reflective Roger Maris is in a hotel room, and the soundtrack is some modern slow song and not a period track.

I, too, used to watch this with my father, as he remembered the famous events. I know I'l cry when I see this in blu, because my father is no longer around to see it with me.

Can't wait for the release!

Yeah, I think it's great too. Amazing how perfect the casting was with Thomas Jane and Barry Pepper.

The footage in When It Was A Game is absolutely mesmerizing. For the people who haven't seen it, the series features lots of color footage from the 30s and 40s. Many of them home movies made by rich people of the era, or ballplayers themselves. Several very prominent baseball stars are shown at the peak of their powers.
