Is it possible to follow this movie without first watching all of the TV series?

Theorhetically you could, but you'd be missing out on the subtleties of the character interactions, especially between
[Show spoiler]Kyon and alt-Yuki as compared to her regular-universe self...
Forget The Evil Dead; what George Lucas has done to Star Wars since 1997 is truly "The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Terror".

IMHO, I'm not sure how much you'll enjoy the movie if you aren't already a fan of the previous series or novels. If you don't already have an attachment to Kyon, the main character/narrator, then you may not empathize with him as he goes through the plight in the movie, or even see it as a plight.

Got my copy today. It is a BD50 (the movie is 42.5GBs). Japanese LPCM 5.1 (16bit). Region A locked. Only extras are 2 theatrical trailers. Subtitles, from a real fast sample, appear to have proper grammar and punctuation.

Watched this today. Exceptional release. PQ and AQ were great. This is probably one of the most beautiful HD Anime transfers I have seen. Subtitles were also very good. The subtitles do suffer from the same problems as the DVD (see here), but other than those formatting issues, they are really good.

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone in Region A who didn't want to wait for a Bandai release (if and whenever that comes).
