I watched Limitless on Wednesday, I posted this in the movie section...

Limitless

Can I just say beforehand, I had the most annoying pair of girls sat next to me who would not stop texting or throwing stuff at their friends sat the row below.

Critics seem to be mainly positive, people on this site seem to be very mixed, I wanted to watch it since I saw the trailer, however I never really seemed crucial on my radar, mainly because it seemed like nothing memorable.

And it was just that, it's nothing memorable.

However, that's not saying it's a bad film, it's a very good film, with a lot of very good things in it. For example, there is a great fight scene in this which comes out of nowhere, which plays on the idea of all the karate films you watched when you were a kid and thought you can replicate every move, they do that here to fantastic effect.

The story is constantly moving, there are rarely any moments where you get a rest, you kinda feel like you are on drugs when trying to follow it, never stops twisting and turning. This is conveyed through the camera work as well, as the camera seems to be constantly moving, it feels disorientating to watch, and I think this is why a lot of members dislike it.

It's quite discomfortable, it uses a lot of strange effects, like the one I found most impressive are the shots where it zooms down city streets but endlessly zooming, with new stuff appearing in the foreground. I don't know how they pulled it off but it works to fantastic effect. But I can see it becoming a nuisance to audiences.

I also really like the acting in this, it's has very little fancy tricks, it's just carrying the plot for A to B with enough charisma, charm and energy, mainly because the main character isn't overly developed so that we can embody his experience and question what we would do while not being so 2 dimensional that he's a nobody. He has a personality and he tells us what it's like in the situations he finds himself in, however, the audience are always asking what they would do in the situation, without detracting from the story.

Robert De Niro is a great as always (well Little Fockers aside), the woman in this, (Abbie Cornish I think) she's pretty alright though she appears only at brief moments and never really leaves an impact. But Bradly Cooper is pretty great in it, showing a range of skills and breaking away from the "douche playboy" role he had made for himself.

Also, best weapon of the year can be found in this film, I won't spoil it, but to be honest, I can't think of a more efficient weapon

So praise, praise, praise but what didn't I like.

Well the film runs out of steam close the end.

First of all, the voiceover becomes patronising within later scenes, and really lacking the vivid description of the earlier scenes.

The film starts to put aside it's visual aspects and becomes grounded very abruptly within the 3rd act, which slows the movie down a lot.

And the ending isn't very good, and this is why the film will not stick in my memory for that long. It wraps up all a bit too nicely for me, and it definitely wraps up too quickly.

[Show spoiler]It ends with a *12 months later* with Robert De Niro telling Bradley Cooper he's found out his secret with the drug, but, Bradley Cooper turns around and said he's altered the drug so he can now stay smart forever, so everything works out great for Cooper. This completely distinguishes the moral aspect of the film,
as much as I love this film, it's ending sucks.

Very entertaining film and well worth the watch, but it isn't the next best thing

8.5/10

Went to see Sucker Punch today. I almost didn't bother because of some of the really bad reviews, but it was just what I expected when first hearing about it last year, and I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely going to pick it up on Blu-Ray. That soundtrack <3

For people who like their Sci-Fi...sciencey, I guess, then this will be the best if will get this year. (Though Cowboys & Aliens looks awesome, it isn't exactly going to be a complex brain tinker)

I'd admit, it does get rather sappy, (
[Show spoiler]"I'm just looking at all this *pause* life"
) I'd also be lying if I didn't get CLOSE to getting teary eyed at his
[Show spoiler]conversation with his father
(I didn't cry, I am a man, not a baby)

I would say this is a solely story driven film, but again, CLOSE to tears. I'd say this mainly because Jake Gyllenhaal was awesome in this film, he is very charismatic, and he carries the film alone. I would go as far to say that I can't think of anyone else who could play in his role.

With that being said, a lot of the side characters are boring and a little one note, the only one being as close to being interesting is Army General who talks to Jake Gyllenhaal's character. All the people on the train are really , and
[Show spoiler]the bomber
is quite terrible, being just a bland stone cold killer, and his motives are quite lame as well

It's short, you're in and you're out in a flash, and it never switches off top gear from the get go (that reminds me, the open credits to the film are really lame) and it's really well directed and written that it never feels boring going through the same 8 mins over and over again.

I'd recommended

9/10

I feel like I'm getting harmer on ratings nowadays (me this time this year would of given out 5 or 10 9.5/10's by this time, I haven't given one out yet) but yet I'm still feeling too kind
I promise I'm usually more up to date with releases

Managed to finally catch Rango last week while it was still on at the Vue in Plymouth, really enjoyed it. Great animation and loved the homages to classic Western films, will definitely pick this one up.

Next on my must-see list is Thor, though I'll be in Spain on its first week of release. I'll be sure to go see it when I get back though.

Aw Rio in 3D and enjoyed it a lot. It wasn't absolutely brilliant and was hugely predictable, but for what it was it was a fun film. The voice cast was great too, and the animation and songs were entertaining. I'm sure the colours will look amazing on blu-ray.

I had to kick a kid in the back because he kept standing up, though. I guess it's my stupid fault for seeing a kids' film in the holidays...

BORING!!!!

70% d**k jokes, 20% people saying f**k in a posh accent, 10% Miscellaneous s**t

Every single one of them predictable as hell!

It always with looks way too cheap (set designs and some creature costumes) or way to expensive (CGI, holy crap was the CGI way too good for this film). The acting is good, I guess, no one is bad in it, I'll be honest, some of the delivery of lines gained a few mumbles of laughter though you could tell them from a mile off.

To be honest, a lot of the people who I went with seemed a lot me pleased with it than me, however, no one was laughing hard, all it could cluster up was a few smiles.

I can only say 4 scenes are laugh-worthy.

It's just a lame comedy, that could of, and should of been a lot funnier.

Saw Scre4m yesterday. I liked it a whole lot more than Scream 2 or 3, which means I'll almost certainly buy it if only for completeness sake (to go with the trilogy).

That said, I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as it could have been. The main plus point for me was the humour, but sadly I didn't find it remotely scary and I thought the killings were...I dunno, boring? Maybe I'm desensitised or something, but they all seemed pretty samey. I know it was rated 15 (facepalm), but that shouldn't stop the creativity - if anything it should have boosted it.

It also annoyed me that despite having a few interesting characters (new and old), it chose to focus on the least exciting ones most of all, which was irritating.

For a director who has not only created some classic examples of the genre, but also demonstrated vast knowledge of what constitutes a horror classic, I expected better.

Still buying it though, if only for future slasher marathons with friends and to watch the extras.

Seen Rio last week! for me learning to do animation like this, it was a great piece of work! Beautiful colours! i liked the story for all its worth, ill buy this on BR as one of the more colourful movies in my collection!

on another note, the girlfriend dragged to see Winnie the Pooh yesterday, unfortunitly Odeon couldnt show it due to "we dont have the code for our digital projectors yet to play it, sorry" so Hollie was tad disappointed! me, Not so much :P

It isn't as good, or memorable as Iron Man (pretty much the biggest flaw) but it is a worthy entry into the superhero genre, and one that sets the bench mark fairly high for the others to come this year. (First one to jump that hurdle being X-Men: First Class, wouldn't wholly be surprised if it gets other it)

If you look at Thor's story, it's very predictable, sure it's adequate enough but it isn't going to blow any minds with it's thought provoking plot Hero is very powerful, but it naive, loses power and sent away, learns lesson but it's too late as jealous Brother has taken over yada yada yada. It's the films biggest problem and it's one of the problems that I think keeps the character of Thor from making an amazing movie, the whole idea around what happens to him isn't really new. Sure the story serves it's purpose and the character of Thor is awesome (it's hard to f**k up the God of Thunder after all) but compared to Iron Man and how he plays upon the real world with terrorism, and Hulk with science creating a monster, there isn't a whole lot interesting things you can do with Thor in a modern world, it just comes across as a fish out of water sort of thing, than an interesting stance of unpredictability.

This also comes across in the jokes. A lot of the jokes here are pretty much stuff you can find in other places, but I can't complain because I laughed

Enough bi*ching however (one of my friends put me in a bad mood after watching it, I said it was really good and he said it was amazing and started attacking me but I'll come back to that in a min) time to talk about the awesome stuff.

Acting-Gasums are all over this movie, especially in Asgard. I loved it, almost everyone talks through shout, it's brilliant. Chris Hemsworth really holds his own compared to Antony Hopkins, and you do get a good feel for his character through his acting, he's fun but never campy or over the top. And whenever it calls for a serious moment, he feels genuine, as genuine as Gods can get like, but still Everyone else is pretty good, Natalie Portman doesn't have all that much to do sadly but she does whats she does well. Supporting cast is great, only person who stand out from them was the guy who played Natalie Portman's scientist friend, there is just something so likable about him

Scripting fairly decent, I liked the nods to
[Show spoiler]Tony Stark
and
[Show spoiler]Bruce Banner
and how they didn't feel forced, or had to know the characters beforehand to follow what is being said

Special Effects are amazing, especially over Asgard, I saw this film in Digital (not 3D though) and I think it's the second one (I think my nearest cinema may have converted to it, since it came up before Source Code, but the other cinema I went to to watch this made a big deal out of it on it's website, just think what it'll be like when we finally get an Imax screen) and most the action scenes are great, there are very few times where you aren't having fun watching the action scenes. However, when it comes to best action scenes of the year, I don't think we will be seeing this film on many, if any lists. But yet again, this isn't a film that relies on action spectacle.

Asgard scenes and Earth scenes flow together perfectly as well, the best thing about the film is how well balanced and handled they both are

I really liked the film, it was a ton of fun to watch, I just feel like the film wasn't trying to be amazing, I felt as if it was "the next step" towards The Avengers I think that's the biggest flaw to it.

Great film though you should all check it out next next Friday

8.5/10

And yes my friend was a right and utter douche, I hate it when I like a film and someone else likes it more and feels the need to argue about it like it will make me like it more, when it ends up making me dislike it more (8.5/10 was the score that hovered over my head just before it was ending, so don't worry, it hasn't been affected). What I hated more was that he played the "film" card on me, saying I was looking for deep meaning in Thor and that said some stuff about it breaking Superhero conventions in a film where at the climax the
[Show spoiler]villain is hanging of the side and the hero helps him up to wind up being a trick
(not really a spoiler, but it is something that happens) come on, a little bit of decency, especially since he's more of a deep meaning film guy than me

WAS THAT SUFFICIENT ENOUGH FOR YOU GUYS???

Films I have seen recently that I will definitely be getting on Blu-Ray after seeing them in the cinema are Source Code and Thor. Also getting Paul but that's probably more because I want the Steelbook rather than the film being awesome.

Oh and Your Highness.
