Thumbs up The Caine Mutiny (1954)

The Caine Mutiny Blu-ray

The Caine Mutiny Blu-ray Review

I just love this film, it was Bogie's last great film role before he died in '57. Adapted from the Pulitzer prize winning novel by Herman Wouk, Bogart truly shows his amazing range in the role of LtCdr Queeg. As a harsh, demanding commander of a WWII destroyer, you hate him and side with his crew. But as the film progresses, we sense the emergence of a sad, disturbed man. You still hate him at the end, but you will also feel sympathy and sadness, and only a great actor can pull off that type of transformation.

It also has a fine supporting cast, Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson, E.G. Marshall, and Fred MacMurray (yes, the absent-minded professor and Steve Douglas from the '60s TV series "My Three Sons"). Before he ended up awash in TV land, MacMurray was an excellent, mostly underrated, character actor. And look for Lee Marvin in a small, early film career role as "Meatball". Marvin was also a technical adviser for the film because of his background as a Marine who fought in the Pacific theater.

Bogart received his third and final academy nomination for Best Actor from this fine film. Overall, the film received 7 academy nominations, including Best Picture, but sadly it did not win in any category.

One final note. Many young film buffs will recall the excellent courtroom scene by Jack Nicholson towards the end of "A Few Good Men". But one of the truly great, climatic courtroom scenes ever caught on film was performed by Humphrey Bogart in "The Caine Mutiny".

Highly recommended.

This has been on my most wanted list for a long time. The Caine Mutiny is one of my all-time favorite films. Catch me at the right time, and it's on my top-10 list. I just wouldn't know what film to bump in order for it to make my sig.

By the way, I know Bogart stars as the protagonist, Queeg with Van Johnson, José Ferrer & Fred MacMurray also starring... But where's the main character on that cover? I just watched this film the other night, and don't even recognize the two characters on the right. How do they rank above Ferrer & the main character (Ensign Willis Seward Keith)?

Hmmm, sharp observation. Ensign Keith was played by Robert Francis in his film debut, and was considered a breakout star because of this role. Tragically, he died the following year in a private plane crash. Perhaps out of respect for the Francis family his image was kept off the cover. As for José Ferrer (Lt. Greenwald), I have no idea...

Cover Mystery - Update:

Seems that Sony copied much of the cover from the "Combat Classics" packaging of this movie that was released on SDVD in May 2007:

This is the original release DVD cover I have...

The Caine Mutiny.jpg

No Robert Francis on this one either.

As far as the BD "combat classics" cover goes... Even without Ferrer (who should be present), why not put Meatball & Horrible or May Wynn & Captain De Vriess? Sometimes I wonder if the people who design these things, know anything about the product they're doing the artwork for? Although in the case of this film, it does seem to be a trend.

Those are two big Bogart movies and I think they are the top candidates to be given the next Blu-ray treatment.

I would also like to have To Have And Have Not, Dark Passage, In A Lonely Place, High Sierra...........Too many to name I guess. At this point the Bogart film I would probably want to see the most on Blu-ray, is Conflict. I'll be very surprised if I ever saw that filmed on BD to be honest, but I really enjoy that Bogart film.

In the next few days I should be getting The African Queen and The Maltese Falcon so I'm looking forward to seeing those films soon.

I've been kind of falling behind on my Bogart BD purchases, even though he's my favorite actor. I have Treasure of the Sierra Madre (my all-time favorite film) & Casablanca. Maybe next payday I'll grab The Maltese Falcon & The African Queen. I have them all on DVD (as well as others), so I haven't exactly been in a rush. For some reason, I watch The Caine Mutiny & Key Largo a lot... A whole lot.

I took a while getting The African Queen and The Maltese Falcon as well because I was waiting to get those films at a good price. I got The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre after it dipped to $13. But after seeing the deal Columbia House has going, I was able to get The other two Bogart films.

FYI-- The Caine wasn't a destroyer. It was a minesweeper I believe. Anyway for sure, it was an insignificent ship which is a central point of the plot. Remember the contrast when they go visit the admiral's ship, the real navy as they saw it, totally different from the Caine.

I ordered this back in April. Every so often Amazon sends me an email saying "we're still trying to locate a copy for you . . "

Sony did a 4k transfer for this one. I guarantee it will look fantastic, every bit the equal of Bridge On The River Kwai, Taxi Driver, Close Encounters, and the Harryhausen films. Have this one preordered with Guns of Navarone, which is also coming from a new 4k scan.

Amazon now has this title coming out on SEPT. 6th. Is that right? If so, add another title to the SEPT/OCT list.

Apparently so - I got an email from Amazon a few minutes ago updating my pre-order back in April, saying the delivery estimate is now Sept. 6 (I have Prime). The database here hasn't been updated yet, but if you click the listing in then the Amazon pre-order Amazon says Sept. 6.

Good to hear about the transfer, Strevlac, Bridge over the River Kwai looks fantastic.

EDIT: Just looked at my pre-order, now I remember why I ordered it so long ago - they had had it on sale, my order is only $13.99, pre-order is now $17.99, altho still a very decent price.

September 6th .........I never pre-ordered it because no release date was available, and now, it's coming out in less than 2 weeks lol. Well that's good but it seems like I missed the $13 deal. Hopefully Amazon drops the price once again so I can pre-order it.
