I don't think anything is being CGI'd unless it's absolutely necessary...

With both ships CGI, they could match the directional lighting perfectly, rather than fake it.

Also I wonder what scale model they used in the now CGI shot, I noticed that the "yellow paint" on the underside of the nacelle is different than it was on the model plus it looks to have more windows.

I've seen that render before, very nice...but that "yellow paint/logo" I keep bringing up is red on that render. Which is it supposed to be? Yellow or red?

No, the segmented-square shape on the bottom on the nacelle. It looks yellow in the screenshots but is red on the render the one user linked to.
Also the shape is different on the CGI ship.

I must be blind. I'm not seeing a difference between his ortho renders, his animation and the Blu-ray screenshots. Either color or shape. Not saying you're wrong, I just don't see it.

EDIT: Wait. Are you talking about the lifeboats? The texture maps could easily have been altered for use on the show. I think he based it on how they looked in Generations. That's not really a big deal.

Neither do I, although it is clear now that the Sins shot with the bird of prey is a complete CG redo as you pointed out. You can tell mainly because many of the windows are off. It's not something I'm going to notice while enjoying these episodes, but is is interesting to make note of.

I think it's just those two opening shots of "Sins" and "Inner Light".

Well, we will know pretty soon either way. It seems pretty clear that the BR.com shots of the Enterprise with the probe and the stardrive orbiting the Bandi world are originals. I imagine they would want to preserve as much of that as possible.

I'm sure when we get season 1 we will get some docs showing what decisions were made at certain points and why.

Wow the more i see on this release, the more psyched for it i get. Some of the cleanups on both the live action and cgi/model shots are really breathtaking. Out of curiosity will this have branching available to see both versions of the FX like trek OS does?

Unlike TOS where although the original effects work looked average when scanned in HD resolution, TNG simply doesn't exist with those effects at that resolution. To do that they'd have to upscale all the effects, clean them up like the 13 seconds of Sins of the Father and then do seamless branching. Honestly sounds like a lot of effort. Unlike TOS the TNG effects work including recompositing and CGI is supposed to remain faithful so really there's not a lot to gain by doing it. It'd only take more time and money and considering the majority of the "new" effects are simply the old ones recomposited they'd be doing it just to have crappy versions of the same shot.

I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore purist (though I do like original versions where possible) but even this isn't too appealing to me.

The original looks like it was sourced from shot from Star Trek III. Maybe the TNG shot was all done on video, instead of film.
