I've noticed that a bunch of Echo Bridge DVDs that have come my way. Their DVD of Prom Night was like that. It's 4:3 and they stretch it to 16:9.

In any event, nobody's going to get the incredible Hickox/Bradley commentary that graced the UK SE DVD: "This is the sound of me opening a can of Coke." And part of that reason is because they were watching Anchor Bay's reconstituted uncut version of the film, so any future Blu-ray would have to be the Director's Cut version to add the commentary, unless someone wanted to go to a lot of trouble.

III is such a mediocre film that the commentary adds a huge bonus to the DVD. It's also worth noting that it's the only audio commentary Doug Bradley has done for a Hellraiser film (possibly any film?).

I just checked out the link and it seems that the Echo Bridge DVD is actually Open Matted and not a cropped full screen version.

But it's horizontally stretched and from an LD-->DVD master:

The picture [on the 2011 Echo Bridge DVD] exhibits bad dot crawl indicative of the [original 1993 Paramount] LD's composite video stream being captured from an entry-level player like a weak comb filter. One curiosity is that I can't find a cut LD version, so if the source for the DVD that Top Ten Media produced (and Echo Bridge apparently ported) was from the LD, they would have had to snip the unrated bits out...

What they should have done was either window box it to 16:9 or leave it 4:3 and not stretch it to 16:9.

You are entitled to your opinion, but please understand that a ratings board cutting parts out of a film (which is a work of art they had no involvement in creating) is hardly insignificant.

In Germany, film censorship occurs all the time and many, many Germans lament it terribly. In the case of Hellbound, a further six minutes has been cut from the 97-minute R-rated version, so you are missing quite a lot of the film, and it is more than likely that not all of it is in missing sex, violence and gore.

Excellent that it's listed though. Probably means a Black Edition is coming. I can't see that opportunity missed...there would be...hell...to pay.

EDIT: I know it's OT, but look at the nightmare of the Hellraiser series in France:

Maybe there will be a standalone version of the japanese disc now after the boxset? That will probably be the best/only choice but also most expensive.

Hard to believe we will see a proper Anchor Bay disc from anyone anytime soon

Not if the Germans release an uncut Black Edition. Even in a Mediabook it will be 1/2 the cost with the same or better quality--unless someone other than King Records re-releases the movies in Japan. As it is now, the King Records releases probably aren't worth the massive import cost.

It wouldn't be worth importing unless by some tragic means, the value of the ¥en drops. It's a shame that Echo Bridge shafted us again with this Blu-ray set coming out at Thanksgiving.

Haven't seen anything about a black edition, only the cut one. You think there is a good chance? The mediabooks were really expensive also compared to normal discs so the price difference probably won't be that big.

Most likely there'll be a Black Edition since Studio Canal released Black Editions of the first two films. They have the rights to the trilogy.

Ah that doesn't sound so bad since Studio Canal can do good things once in awhile Strange not to do the last with the other two though if they got the rights, same with Image and US for that matter.
