OVERVIEW

The critically-acclaimed Sly Cooper® franchise makes its first original, full-featured debut on the PlayStation®3 system (PS3™) with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time ™. Developed by Sanzaru Games, the studio behind The Sly Collection, Sly Cooper and his mischievous cohorts, Bentley and Murray, return in a brand new epic, time-traveling adventure in this latest installment of the popular action adventure series. STORYLINE

Sly Cooper Thieves in Time continues to chronicle the adventures of the Sly Cooper gang from where Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves concluded. After completing their latest heist, Sly carries on with a case of alleged amnesia and dances off with gal pal Carmelita, leaving Bentley as the keeper of the treasured Thievius Raccoonus, The Cooper family’s ancient book of master thievery. When Bentley discovers that pages of the book have begun to disappear in front of his eyes, he must round up the gang and save the Cooper Clan legacy from being destroyed forever.

The world needs more platformers! Hoping it's still fairly traditional.

Quote:
Sly Cooper Thieves in Time is real. You know that from the news out of PlayStation's E3 2011 Press Conference, but that was just a trailer of what's to come. I've seen the full E3 demo. I can tell you it looks good -- really good -- but I couldn't help myself from asking questions about the developer when I was watching the game. Namely, "Who the hell is Sanzaru Games?"

The answer is simple. Sanzaru is a San Francisco Bay Area developer that noticed one its favorite franchises wasn't getting a fourth installment and thought that sucked. Still, I'm getting ahead of myself. Years ago, some folks broke away from Activision and created Sanzaru. The developer made Ninja Reflex for the Wii and DS and moved on to porting Secret Agent Clank to the PS2. But when Clank was about done, these folks decided it was time to do something they loved.

They ponied up the cash for a PlayStation 3 development kit and sat down to create a Sly Cooper demo. From scratch. With no assets from Sucker Punch -- the developer that created the franchise but had since moved on to Infamous -- Sanzaru went to work on their version of the "Thievius Racconus."

In a month, Sanzaru created a playable demo of what it though Sly in HD should be. Sony agreed with the vision and -- perhaps more importantly -- so did Sucker Punch. That led to Sanzaru porting the original PS2 games to the PS3's Sly Collection while working on what would go on to become Sly Cooper Thieves in Time.

When I heard the guys behind Sanzaru talk about their game, it was clear how much they care about this franchise. They had nothing but glowing things to say about Sucker Punch and its three Sly games, but at the same time, they were full of ideas on how to make Sly relevant again. They kept the idea of starting fresh -- they're not reusing code from the games they ported but instead are learning techniques from it. They're intent on "staying true to the spirit" of the original games, and from the two levels I saw, I think they're on track -- this looks like what you'd expect a new Sly to look like on the PS3, and its packing familiar faces, too. It's super-slick and expands on the ideas we all associate with the franchise.

It sucks, but that's all I can tell you right now. At least the important stuff is known -- you know that Sly Cooper Thieves in Time is real, you know the story of Sanzaru Games, and you know that this game looks good. I can't wait to tell you about it this Tuesday.

Fingers crossed!

Ready at Dawn was competent with the God of War license. Modern Warfare 3 appears to be looking like the best one so far.

Maybe these guys will surprise us.

I'm playing through the first two installments of The Sly Collection right now and I'm impressed with Sanzaru's work thus far, even if they're little more than an HD upgrade of Sucker Punch's work. It appears that the original voice actors were retained (which is always a good sign), and as long as the wit and banter between Sly and Bentley stay true to the first three games, then I can't wait to see what Sanzaru has in store for fans like me.

Thieves in Time takes place following the end of Sly 3, where the group split up and Bentley went off to create a time machine. Bentley realizes that the pages of the Thievus Racoonus are disappearing, so he must pull together his old friends to travel through time and make things right.

We watched one level where players begin as Murray and quickly switch over to Sly, demonstrating that character swapping will be happening throughout the course of levels. The Sly portions looked completely true to what Sly fans know and love about the older games: a mix of tight platforming and not-too-challenging stealth. The game even uses the exact same dramatic noise when Sly is trying to sneak past a guard unnoticed.

One major gameplay addition is costumes. In previous Sly games, the dashing raccoon would sometimes change costumes in order to infiltrate areas where he wasn’t supposed to be. In Thieves in Time, each costume will grant a new power of some sort. For example, I saw a pirate suit that slowed down time, allowing Sly to slip under fast-moving trap doors. Another costume provided him with a suit of armor that made him invulnerable to fire along with a shield that could deflect projectiles.

Beyond some basic platforming, I also got to see a boss battle with a tiger character known as El Jefe (voiced by none other than Nolan North, though he’s using a Spanish accent that sounds pretty different from any of the characters he’s known for). Sanzaru emphasized that they want to implement epic boss battles taking place across multiple areas.
Quote:
This first look at Thieves in Time already has me relieved that the game looks solid despite Sucker Punch not being involved. Sanzaru still has a lot of time to keep working and clean things up, too, as the game isn’t expected to be released until 2012. My hopes are officially high for another memorable Sly Cooper adventure.

I knew there would be an announcement for a fourth game sooner or later. I thought the original game was brilliant, but I've not yet played the sequels. I have my eye on the HD trilogy, though.

That is cold man. Really cold.

I love that there's a new Sly game coming out, but since it's not being done by Sucker Punch, my hopes aren't as high.

Agreed but the gameplay trailer looks promising. Hopefully there is a demo, if it plays as good as the "collection" (which it should) I'm in.

Sanzaru games did a little Q&A thing on their facebook page, so here that is:

Q: will the gang communicate by the binocucom still?
A: yes the binocucom is back

Q: Will the Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time worlds be bigger than previous games?
A: yes the environments for Thieves in Time will be larger than in the previous games (Thanks to the PS3!)

Q: Just for the record, if you guys made a full sized Sly Cooper Cane replica, I'd pay at least $150 for it.
A: yeah a Collectors Edition Cane would be awesome, we will try and figure out how to make it happen

Q: How similar is the control scheme to the previous 3? How are you improving the things you've changed?
A: the basic character controls will remain the same, but there are some new things coming so stay tuned

Q: When will there be another gameplay video? Will it show Bently or Murray
A: Comicon would be a good time for some new footage i think

Q: Where can we expect updates? IGN, Facebook, your official website?
A: when we get closer to launch next year we will setup a dedicated forum. (You can also follow us on Twitter for latest news tweets)

Comicon - right.

I hope they don't make the levels too big. I didn't like it in Banjo-Tooie, too much travelling and spread of interactive or interesting details. And there you had more means of quick travel like flying which Sly (probably still) doesn't have.
