Yes, Dragon Crown Is A Vanillaware Game And Ignition Are Publishing It

Yesterday, we ran a video montage of upcoming PlayStation Vita games, amongst which was one game titled Dragon Crown. It looked very much like a game developed by Muramasa: The Demon Blade developer, Vanillaware. It turns out, it is.

Siliconera can confirm that Dragon Crown is a new game for the PSVita and PlayStation 3, and will be published by Ignition Entertainment. The game is currently slated for a spring 2012 release. You’ll be treated to a trailer of the title later today.

They haven't come out and said so, but this looks like a spiritual successor to Odin Sphere, which in turn was a spiritual successor to Princess Crown, both titles of which were action-RPGs.

This looks like it's 2.5D with 2D sprites, sort of like Dungeons and Dragons meets TMNT.

The character designs are ridiculous, but the game is pretty despite that. Definitely on my radar!

Dragon's Crown is a new 2D Action RPG from Vanillaware, the developer that's also working on PSP's Grand Knights History for Marvelous Entertainment. Ignition is handling the worldwide publishing on this one. The official site says that it's the second Japan-produced title from Ignition (the first was El Shaddai).

Although the game appeared in Sony's PS Vita trailer reel, the official site reveals it to be in development for both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. The game will see release in Spring 2012 and features support for 1 to 4 players.

George Kamitani is directing the game. Ignition's Kashow Oda is serving as producer.

As detailed at the official site, Dragon's Crown offers "red-hot multiplayer 2D action." Up to four players can team up via online play to work through dungeons, clearing quests and progressing through the game's story.

The lets players build up their character as they collect items, treasure and weapons from the dungeons. You'll need to build up your character to face off agains the screen-filling dragons.

The official site isn't totally clear about this, but it seems that the game's PS3 and Vita version will have cross console play. The official site says "Up to four players work together via PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita."

Dragon's Crown Originally Planned for Dreamcast

Vanillaware's new PS3 and PS Vita title Dragon's Crown is featured in this week's Famitsu through a four page interview with director George Kamitani. Here's a bit of what's leaked out from the interview via the usual flying get suspects.

• The game's genre is "multi play belt floor 2D action RPG." I'm not sure what the "floor" is supposed to be, but I believe the "belt" means it's a beat-em-up.
• The project got its start 13 years back after Sega Saturn classic Princess Crown. It was originally planned for Dreamcast.
• Actual development did not begin until after Oboro Muramassa on Wii.
• The game will have attacks that make use of stage geography.
• There will be cooperative play elements. The game will support at most four players.
• Vanillaware is currently seeking programmers to finish work on the project.
• Kamitani says that he took the project to a number of publishers, but Ignition gave them the okay.
• Kamitani is a big fan of Golden Axe and King of Dragon, and wanted to try seeing what would happen if those games were evolved while staying 2D.

I enjoyed Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire(but haven't played Muramasa since it's a Wii game), but not 100% certain if I would enjoy this. I will admit the artwork does look really good.

More details from this week's Famitsu

We already provided a report on some of the content from Famitsu's interview this week with Dragon's Crown director George Kamitani. Sokuho has provided its usual in-depth summary from the magazine, so here are a few additional bits.

We mentioned that the game was originally planned for Dreamcast. The reason it didn't come out for Dreamcast was because Kamitani could not get the go sign from a publisher. Around the time that work was being completed on Wii's Muramasa Demon Blade, Kamitani went around to various publishers. Ignition immediately signed on.

Dragon's Crown appears to emphasize multiplayer. Kamitani says teamwork is a focus. Four players can play together. When you're on your own, you can play with three CPU-controlled characters.

(Incidentally, the magazine lists the game as "cross platform compatible for PS3 and PS Vita," so this does seem to be confirmation that players on both systems will be able to play together.)

Here's one possible way that teamwork will play a role in the game. Your weapons can be damaged and destroyed. If you lose a weapon, you'll have to fight barehanded until a thief steals a weapon.

Kamitani mentioned one limitation about the game's elf class. If you use a bow and arrow as your weapon, you'll be limited in the number of arrows. You can recover arrows by touching dead enemies.

Players can select to be the same character type. Currently, they're planning to show each player's name on the top of the character so that you can differentiate. If they have time, they'll add palette swaps.

If you die during your play session, you will be revived after a some tens of seconds, assuming you have lives left of course. If all players in your party die, you're all returned back to town.

There will be a few communicative aspects to the game. You won't be able to chat, but you will be abel to do greetings and create a dying message.

I'm not totally sure if I'm reading this part right, but it seems that the game will have a Demon's Soulish system in place where the dead bodies of other players will appear in your game session as bones. From the bones, you can see information about the other player and their dying message. If you like a particular player, you can take his bones and covert it into an NPC for future use.

Kamitani says that Dragon's Crown is a game he truly wanted to make, and he's putting his full strength behind it. He said to expect a number of additional elements beyond what has been announced thus far.

Vanillaware will be staffing up shortly with programmers to complete the project, which is due for PS3 and PS Vita release in Spring 2012.

I would imagine so unless he can't see for having no eyes. Though since his skull is so close to her chest, he can probably still at least hopefully can feel her boobs touching his head.

But anyways kind of weird to have a sorceror who can do dark magic and yet be a healer. Plus usually with dark magic, you would normally have like really strong, and destructive magical attacks.

I actually love the extreme ridiculousness of the characters and artwork. I agree it looks a lot like Odin Sphere meets Guardian Heroes. Can't wait!
