Only seen the first ep so far myself. I recenty bought the DVD boxset based on the assumption it will not get a BD release anytime soon... As far as catalogue shows go, HBO would probably prioritise Sopranos (2-5) or Six Feet Under (or maybe even Sex and the City) over Oz, they'd sell better. It might have been edited on video in SD as well? God knows all these shows could do with an upgrade, though.

Also worth bearing in mind Oz, like Deadwood and SatC are both distributed by Paramount in the uk, not Warner Home Video as in North America. This means even if it does get a release eventually it may well be like Deadwood - a North America only, region locked release. But maybe it'll happen one day, it was HBOs first show after all, they owe it a lot!

I enjoyed the first four seasons but this, like most of HBO's early-mid 90s stuff, would look absolutely horrible on blu-ray. See also Larry Sanders and Mr. Show for more evidence of what was once the 'HBO look'.

I've yet to see a blu- ray made from a film source that is not a fine upgrade (unless excessively digitally manipulated or from a damaged source). It wouldn't be eye candy, but it'd look fine and would be better than the DVDs, I'm sure there is a possibility it could be done... But I'm not holding my breath...

Sorry, obviously that was too general, I meant the first one hour dramatic TV series produced by them, the point being it was pretty much a landmark for them (and TV in general) and this status might bolster the blu-ray release chances somewhat. But, as I said, I'm not holding my breath.

I love this show and hope it doesn't get a Blu-ray release, it would look horrendous.

It was HBO's first hour-long dramatic series.

I don't really understand why? Plenty of BDs from visually mediocre sources have made decent upgrades... I don't see why it would suddenly look more horrible if it was free of compression artefacts etc

I suspect that everyone believes it will look horrible because HBO only has SD masters of the series. In order for the series to look as good as it can, HBO would have to go back and re-scan the film elements for HD resolution. It's also entirely possible that post for this series was done on video rather than at the film level, which would mean editing and possibly effects shots would have to be re-done a la Star Trek: TNG.

I have to say, I doubt that we will see the series on BD, but you never know...

It's brutal and brilliant. I usually watch it once a year as you do get value out of the entire box set. I agree with some that I dont think this would look THAT much better on blu.

I'd rather have The Wire blu box set.

How so? Was it not shot on film?

The Wire may have been shot on SD cameras, but surely Oz was shot on film, like the Sopranos?
