United Kingdom The Cat O' Nine Tails (Arrow)

Starring: James Franciscus, Karl Malden, Catherine Spaak
Directed by: Dario Argento
Rating: TBC
Duration: 111 mins

Overview: Caught between the truth and a murderer’s hand!

A break in at a genetics lab leads to a spiralling vortex of bloody murder in Cat O’ Nine Tails, Dario Argento’s 70s Giallo classic.

Strange circumstances surrounding the crime pique the interest of a journalist and a blind crossword compiler whose sharp ears have overheard talk of blackmail. However, all the would be investigators leads soon regret the help they gave as scientists die in front of speeding trains and photographers are viciously slain while others fall to their screaming deaths down elevator shafts in this surreal and nightmarish thriller from one of the acknowledged masters of Italian horror.

Quote:
visual reproduction here is, unfortunately, likely to cause disappointment. Whilst it’s appreciated that the source material is going to have suffered degradation over the years, it seems difficult to justify a visual quality here which is of a lower standard than Arrow’s release of the earlier The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, which struck a good balance between maintaining the original visual appearance of the period, whilst also presenting a clean and accurate image. The picture here is subject to a certain level of noise, with occasional flecks making an unwanted appearance with surprising regularity.

so dose this compare to the BU version dose anyone know

How does it compare to the Blue Underground release? I fancy a bit of Argento and its only £8.99 at play.com.

^ Michael MacKenzie (of landofwhimsy.com) states, 'As suspected, going by those screenshots: same awful master plus Arrow's usual shoddy Apple Compressor encoding.' So BU's Argento bd wins over Arrow's Argento bd. Again.

Indeed. Beginning with Time Bandits and the Cinema Paradiso re-release, Arrow slowly and steadily climbed out from the "don't even bother" gutter, eventually rising to "pretty much the best thing that can happen to a title".

I just hope the standard edition timelines are compressed going forward, that The Thing was not a one-time... thing. Having a title only available from scalpers for 6 months is both annoying and discouraging. I could just get the LE, but that would make my OCD want to get the LEs for the other Arrow Argento titles, which is something I'd really, really, really rather not do at this point...

It's at times like this that I feel like I've been cursed by a gypsy to buy every Dario Argento film at least three times...

Pre-ordered from Amazon, am assuming that price will drop to 19.99 before release. Am looking forward to seeing a 4K mastered version where fine detail isn't obliterated by scanner noise.

United Kingdom The Cat O' Nine Tails (Arrow 4k transfer LTD)

NEW UK/US TITLE: The Cat o’ Nine Tails (Dual Format Blu-ray + DVD) Limited Edition

https://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/shop/in...roduct_id=1059

Following the success of his debut feature, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as “nine times more suspenseful” than its predecessor, was The Cat O’ Nine Tails.

When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arnò (Karl Malden, Patton, One-Eyed Jacks), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute’s scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus, Beneath the Planet of the Apes) to crack the case. But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperilled in their search for the truth. And worse still, Lori (Cinzia De Carolis, Cannibal Apocalypse), Franco’s young niece, may also be in the killer’s sights…

This second entry in the so-called “Animal Trilogy” found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (Il Sorpasso) and Rada Rassimov (Baron Blood), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), The Cat O’ Nine Tails remains one of Argento’s most suspenseful and underrated films.
