I've never seen this and want to check it out. But is the Unrated cut shorter than the other version?

In the US there's both an 85 minute R-rated version, and a 97 minute Unrated version. Both cuts are called "Dead Alive". Everywhere else, you get "Braindead" which runs about 103 minutes (or about 99 minutes at PAL speed). If you want to see the uncut version you'll have to get an import DVD, and they all look like booty. Dot-crawl, analog video noise, the works...

This Blu-ray may be the shorter Dead Alive cut, but it's by far the best looking version out there (sad as that may be). So, import the DVD if you want to see the whole film, or get the Blu-ray if you don't mind it being the shorter cut. Supposedly Peter Jackson himself re-cut it while making the new title sequence, but I've yet to find any real confirmation on that.

A shame you can't just buy Braindead on Blu-ray, but maybe someday...

It's amazing that they managed to get 20 screenshots that (pretty much) didn't contain any blood or gore.

Honestly the screenshots don't look nearly as bad as some of the comments in this thread and others have suggested. I guess I'm a little easier to convince than some, seeing as I used to watch this on VHS all the time back in the day.

I recently saw at 35mm screening of "Dead Alive" and the blu ray screenshots seem to represent the print faithfully. This is one my all time favorites so I can't wait to get a hold of this.

As well as being edited, wasn't it cropped from 1.66:1 to 1.85:1 for the US release?

It's a lazy release. No doubt they've tried their best with the video transfer, but no extras to speak of and (regardless of PJ's "preferred" version) I'm sure most people would want to see the longer cut (or both).

Still, I'm buying it.... but hoping for a better version in due course.

I managed a theatre that played Briandead at the Toronto International Film Festival September of 2002. Peter Jackson was there and although the film appeared to be complete (including credits) he said it was a copy from the nearly completed work print. I don't remember if it was in stereo or mono but he sat at the back and held a Dolby fader on a long cord from the projection suite in his hand to adjust the volume as he deemed necessary. I sat and watched it in the projection booth where I could smoke and could hear the sold out audience cheering, clapping and having a blast in the projection room over the audio from the monitor and clacking of the projectors. It was a huge hit.

They certainly did NOT try their best with the image. It is riddled with white specks and dull as dirt. It looks marginally better than the DVD, but it is cropped and milky.

Oh dear. Sounds like a lose-lose situation then really.

Presumably a lot of it is down to the quality of the source materials, but it does sound disappointing.

Trouble is, I'm not convinced anyone is working on a better release - it's never had a single good DVD release in all these years.

Any sign of this in Canada at b&m stores? I thought for sure at least HMV would have it, but they don't even have a listing in their system at all, even for a forthcoming release. I know Amazon has it, but there's nothing much else I'm in the market for right now in order to get free shipping...

Just got this! Gonna watch it soon, such a fun film.

Though I forgot it came out and had to buy it. Nowhere near had it so I ordered it on Amazon ($10 with my prime free 2 day shipping) and got it today (yes... i got free next day not rare but still awesome) in the mail. Go into work this morning and what do I see? Dead Alive. -__-

Saved $5 though! (Target has it at $14.99)
