P4 above 3ghz can play HD video, but i think your spec is abit max out.
so you will experience alot of drop frame esp with high bitrate avc and the cpu will be at 100% all the time.

c2d is nice and can fully support at around 50-80% cpu. best to buy those this gen nvidia 8 series, which help to offload processing needed to 20-50% cpu but they are suck at gaming.

A 3.2 ghz P4 ain't fast enough for 1080P video, It's only sufficent for 720p.
Blu-ray is 1080p.

New rig should be more than efficent. ATI card are good too, they just are not keeping up with nvidia in terms of card releases. There will always be a faster one. It never ends. But mostly vdieo playback is CPU intensive rather than GPU intensive.

I would build myself a new rig too, but I got my PS3 to do HD games and Blu-ray, and my PC is still perfectly suited to browse web, and study for Microsoft certifications.

But if any component kicks the bucket, I will build a fairly decent PC.

Blu-ray is 1080p.
can be done.
my 2.5ghz p4 also can play 1080p but vc1.
basically, you need a fresh install of xp and install nothing else.

guys.... forgot. it's 1440x900, not 1080p.
it should be fine. I use Vista as my main OS, while XP remains unused in other partition
