Some discs are regionally encoded so that they can only be played on a player with that encoding. New release movies are likely to be regionally encoded, but catalogue (older) titles usually are not.

North America is region A, Europe, Australasia region B and region C for other countries.

If you buy movies from Europe to play on a USA player, you would need to check that the disc is region free.
Blu-ray Titles (610) includes - SteelBooks [198] 3D Movies [50] Digibooks (41) Viva Metal Box (18) Blu-ray/DVD Combos (121)

Region A is all America (North, South and Middle), Japan, Korea and the Southeast Asia.

Region B is Europe, Australia and Africa.

Region C is mainly Russia, China and India.

Most releases are region free, even new ones because all Warner releases are region free and almost all releases in Europe and Australia are also region free.

Sony and Disney have a policy to only region code day-and-dates in US. All other releases are region free.

Fox have previous only used region coded discs but have changed policy in Europe and Australia there most new releases from them are region free now.

You will also find that in certain countries, region coding has been found to impede global free trade so it isn't allowed.

An example is while the discs themselves might be coded, in Australia, DVD players will play coded discs for any region.
