It's only $14 here in Canada, I will be getting it soon. I don't care about the reviews, I just love Daft Punk.

The reviews on Amazon right now seem more trustworthy. All the reviews say the blu-ray is like a DVD with almost everyone ejecting the blu-ray to check if they didn't just put the DVD in.

I think the Blu-ray is probably worth getting if you don't already own the dvd. The movie itself is worth owning. But it doesn't look like it's worth upgrading.

As far as I can tell, Toei animated this at 24fps to the music, and then converted it to 25fps for EMI using an old-fashioned NTSC>PAL converter box. The French release is basically this master upscaled, while the US release is that master converted back to 24fps, complete with dropped frames and deinterlacing artifacts.

Sadly, it's not ever going to look better. Not unless EMI gets Toei to re-animate the whole thing from scratch, anyway.

Make no mistake, the R1 DVD has some awful compression and no lossless, so the Blu-ray isn't worse... it just isn't much better, either.

I love it when smart people talk . It makes me happy.

This makes so much sense. So. Much. Sense.

I agree, the video wasn't perfect. But if you are right, then there was little to nothing that could be done to make this any better. So, technically, they didn't screw up, they just couldn't do any better...

That said, the lossless audio is so beautiful, it blows me away. Simply stunning. I posted a review on Amazon to try and balance things out a bit, as the video quality may not be amazing, it's sure not enough to use the disc as a coaster.

And hell, in Canada I paid $13 for it

If I take everything else away and leave only the audio, it's well worth $13. Heck, $30.

The real question is: what was the source material?

The thing is.... FOOLY COOLY on blu looks better than this does, and that was essentially an upconvert. Am I to believe that the only master out there for INTERSTELLA 5555 is video tape?

The US version is the same thing, except the frames have been deinterlaced (poorly) and then dropped 1-in-25 of them to run at 24fps. Don't bother wasting your money twice.

Shame about this flick. Guess I'll stick to my US DVD. :(

If you can get it cheap enough, I cannot stress how amazing the audio is on it.

Sure, picture is important - but for this, I bought it specifically for the audio content.

Ok so this French disc doesn't even work on my PS3, so I will be shipping this back to DD, and I appreciate them wasn't my time sending me an import disc that won't work on most US BD players.

So does the audio on the French release have a pitch problem? I see that Deep Discount has the French Blu-ray for around $12. I can sell my DVD for about that much and I am Region Free ready... but I'd only be buying it to hear one of my favorite albums with a higher resolution audio presentation (considering how there's almost no video upgrade).

Anyone know? I heard someone in this thread mention that and I wouldn't want to order the release if that's the case.
