IMO, Pitch Black was the better of the two. It had a more believeable script. Not to say that Chronicles is bad.
You could wait and save up then get the Riddick Collection...it also has Dary Fury(albeit on dvd).

For plot/movie I'd go for Pitch Black, for special effects and sound (of reference quality for me as well as picture quality), The Chronicles Of Riddick.

pitch black easily. much better thriller

they turned the 2nd one into some kinda goofy superhero almost

the first one easily is the better of the 2 movies. more of a sci-fi horror with some great action/monster scenes

second is one is kinda a goofy sci-fi action movie with less plot

Technically Pitch Black is also the first of the two. A few characters from it will be in Riddick, so if you want the most out of the series I'd start at the beginning.

Pitch Black has a better story with better acting, but lacking special effects while Chronicles of Riddick had a much larger budget with better special effects, but a weaker story.

Pitch black is a better movie, as well as, the first movie. Chronicles has character relationships that build off Pitch Black.

Sometimes we hear of people who are “very” honest, “mostly” honest, or even “a little” honest.
Should we even use modifiers with the word honest? I don’t believe so. There are no degrees of honesty. Either we are honest or we aren't.

Pitch Black, hands down, no question about it.

Chronicles shows you what happens when they take a sweet idea from a fairly low-budget, indie sci-fi and try and spin a shitty "epic franchi$$$e" out of it. It's like the drop in quality and awesome-factor of the Matrix to the Matrix sequels, except a little bit moreso.

I also prefer Riddick, but I'm a sucker for fleshed-out alternate universes with wacko backstories that want to be Dune when they grow up. Not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination. Bonus: Thandie Newton.

Pitch Black is a better movie by any conventional measure. Biceps galore, but as the saying goes, seen one, you've seen them both.

Pitch Black I thought was at least a good solid sci-fi movie. It was more a standard horror/sci-fi along the lines of aliens. It holds up pretty well in that genre.

Chronicles of Riddick I didn't know WTF was going on. It was nothing at all like the 1st movie, and almost not even related to it except for the Riddick character. Although admittedly I really didn't pay too much attention to the story, I found Chronicles so bad I really couldn't even stand to finish watching it.
