Default Rumor (denied): Big Bang Announcement from Sony October 12th

Rumor has it that Sony will be making a very big announcement this coming October 12. This came from the French site GamePro which said that there is something brewing in the company's offices.

While Sony has yet to comment on this, analysts are predicting that this is all about a US$ 100 price drop for the PlayStation 3. If this rumor is true, it wouldn't be very surprising considering that quite a few big video game companies like Eidos, Square-Enix, and Ubisoft have voiced their stand that regarding the matter.

The timing would also be perfect considering that holiday season is approaching. We'll just have to wait until October 12 to see what Sony's big announcement is all about. Hopefully it'll be as big as their announcement of the Dual Shock 3 controller.

Sony already has the new SKU for the new PS3 filed with the FCC (it's in another thread on the forum). Should be the rumored price drop.

We'd be talking $399 right?

And it's the lower capacity HD correct?

As I posted in the BD players section:

-----------------

With the submission to FCC on Sep 1st and the 45 day secrecy request from SCEI, the Oct 12 rumour seems bang on.

Stands to reason the confidentiality would be requested till a point in time which lies beyond the date on which SCEI itself would reveal the secret.

Unless we see an extension of the secrecy, Oct 12 seems a go. Or at least, some news before Oct 15.

Further links to this rumour can be found at AVS (french site) and Arstechnica...

I hope it will be a cheaper console. Sony need to start shifting units in big numbers or the 360 will take a firm hold of the lead, and that will in turn cause developers to head to the MS console.

PS3 is selling ok, but it should be flying out of the shops. Maybe this new marketing push Sony are about to commence (pushing all the non gaming features of the console) will help, along with some big title blu-ray releases.

They need to do something though, because Heavenly Sword and Lair don't look like they will be the AAA sellers they should have been. Frankly the best game on PS3 right now, imo, is Warhawk.

We will have to see...

I still remember the last "big announcement" from Sony and all the speculation surrounding it...then it turned out to be the announcement of Immortal Beloved. Kind of hard to get too excited.

I think they'll announce a firmware pgrade to let the ps3 beam directly into your brain. or perhaps a new blender function so you can watch blu rays and make smoothies at the same time.

i'd like to hear an announcement of the dvr function for america. or the 1.1 firmware upgrade for ps3. I already have 2 ps3s so a price drop means nothing.

duh! but don't you know I am the ONLY person that matters. jeesh. plus I will personally hate on everyone who gets a ps3 cheaper than I did.

this also would mean there are more people to embarrass me when I play online.

Price drop, Home release, and PS3 update for profile 1.1 would be nice for me... I need a 3rd or maybe even a 4th PS3 as my den and bedroom dont have one yet for BD playback
