Cleopatra Blu-ray Limited Edition w/ book

The UK branch of 20th Century Fox Entertainment has revealed that it will release Joseph L. Mankiewicz's legendary Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The exact technical specs, supplemental features, and region coding status for this release are unknown at the moment, but the preliminary release date set by the studio is January 30th.

That doesn't bother me too much. If I can get everything minus the box and trinkets for $20 or less then I'll go that route. I did that with the Wal-Mart exclusive of Ben-Hur and don't regret it one bit.

this is one of Fox's most iconic films--I would certainly expect great quality of any bd release.
Fox would be eviscerated if they screwed up Cleopatra.

I wouldn't worry about it. Fox takes good care of their classics most of the time. Look at The Robe and The Sound of Music. I'm sure this one will be great too.

Oh yes, day 1 buy.

This is true 70mm Todd-AO eye-candy. I'm assuming this will be the 243-minute version, but hopefully some of the 72 minutes cut from the initial 6-hour-cut could be included as extras. Adjusted for inflation, I think this is still the most expensive movie ever made.

That's good news but wouldn't it have made more sense to hold off and release the movie in 2013 as a 50th Anniversary Edition and released maybe The Poseidon Adventure instead in 2012 for its 40th Anniversary?

It appears the studios are taking more initiative of properly restoring the classics films in HD for their Blu-ray release, than the newer movies.

It's quite possible 2013 would be the release date. I mean one would expect to have a bigger announcement for such a movie then just showing up on a website

Well I remain to be convinced that this is happening, but do the public really care about anniversaries? I don't think they give a damn. The Ben-Hur 50th Anniversary Edition is two years late, I wonder if Warner have had any complaints about that, I'd bet they've had zero. There's a lot of great old movies being released in the four months before Christmas. I think Fox should join the party.

if Warner can pass off Ben Hur Blu-ray as the 50th Anniversary Edition 2 years after the fact, I don't see any problem with Fox passing off Cleopatra Blu-ray as the 50th Anniversary a year to two early. And with the passing of Elizabeth Taylor earlier this year I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a rush to bring her films to Blu-ray.

I was thinking there must be a pretty good master of this available - a sub-channel of the Fox affiliate in Tucson broadcasts older movies in digital 480i and aired Cleopatra recently, and even though it was only standard def it looked much better than a DVD.

Id rent it first. This film didnt do as well as hoped and IIRC it was almost considered a bust at the time. It had an enormous budget and was very grand in scope but may or may not have worked as planned.

A 6.8 on IMDB is quite a ways below some of the other epics from that era, like Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia.
