I bought both, though many are skipping the box and just buying the SACD and the Experience Edition. That saves a good chunk of cash over the box and the only real item you lose going that way is the Quad mix on the Blu-ray.

A slight preference for the sound of the SACD, though the difference is so small that it may come down to which format your equipment favors. The SACD is the new holy grail mastering in the end.

As I had mentioned earlier I'm going to give you my little review of WYWH SACD.
System used for testing Denon AVR-987P early 2000's Mission 700 series 7.1 setup (only ran 5,1 as everything was run pure direct) Oppo BDP-80 for SACD Panasonic DVD-A player for the CD layer Streaming to my Oppo for my early 80's Columbia House CD. I only used Welcome To The Machine for my comparison. First off my lossless rip of Columbia House: Sounded fine as it's the only version I've been hearing since my vinyl years. Second up: The CD layer of the SACD on the panasonic direct analog in. Wow, couldn't believe how much clearer everything was, that was my impression in general, more room for everything to breath. Good remaster Third up: (Running direct audio on the Oppo also) Stereo Sacd, a pretty amazing difference, For the first time in my life I could hear the different vocals so well separated, it really jumped at me. Everything in this mix is awesome, Roger Waters' bass has never sounded so good before, very clean and full range. The other thing that was a first was when the siren picks up volume and frequency I could actually feel the pressure in my ears. Don't have tons of SACD and DVD-A's but it's more than a welcomed addition to my collection. And lastly the 5.1 mix: Holy SH*T. I will repeat what has been said before, this album was not meant to be heard in stereo (from the begining I would bet, well maybe) 5.1 is just so perfect for this. Just plain amazing mix, it's not a question of surround use on here as every channel has a reason to be in this mix. I can't remember hearing something so brilliant in a long time. Panning is invisible, level matching between channels is perfect, just about everything in this version is so much better than what I have been listening to for so long. If the rest of the albums stacks up, it might, I do say might, top DSotM as my favorite SACD. No brainer purchase for those who can play 5.1 or even just stereo SACD's in my humble opinion. Thanks for the shootout notes, penta. Can't wait to check it out. The fact that APO produced it means a lot. We're lucky this is finally available.

I would think that because the (5.1) mix on the Blu and SACD is identical that any perceived quality difference comes from the gear used for playback.
(That's only my thought... nothing really to back it up. I do know that the data is "supposed" to be the same on both copies.) I have the DSotM SACD and the WYWH immersion set and I'm glad I got the immersion set over the SACD for WYWH. If for no other reason,... the blu is more scratch resistant and there are a LOT more blu ray players to choose from for playback. Add to that it comes with 4 other discs and so on. I'm not trying to put the SACD down because I adore my DSotM SACD and had a hard time deciding between the WYWH options. For me, I had a gift card at BB and that made the choice favor the box set. I just don't think it's fair to suggest the SACD is a better "mix" when I believe it's been stated the data is the same for both versions. -Brian

The data can't possibly be the same, as SACD doesn't use PCM.
I haven't seen it stated anywhere whether the Blu-ray uses PCM from the DSD source or was created separately from the analogue master tapes but the SACD was the 5.1 engineer's preferred format (James Guthrie). If the PCM 24/96 mix was created directly from the original analogue tapes then the source material in each case was identical, but then you still have the differences at play between DSD and PCM and the quality of your source components. I've read both sides of the argument, for me way more important is no loudness wars and great mastering, and I'm grateful that we have a high resolution option at all. The only thing I'm interested in is the 5.1 mix, and while I would really love the Quad mix as well it cannot come with a $75 premium price tag, so for me the SACD was an easy decision and I'll reiterate my earlier disdain for not including standalone SKU's of the Blu-ray discs. Were both priced the same I woudl have chosen the Blu-ray so I could have 5.1, 4.0 and 2.0 on the same disc. If I can look after my vinyl, I can look after my SACD's! |

Of course, he also put his name on the CD's.
What I said was, James says he prefers the SACD format and that's something he told people in attendance at the Wish You Were Here 5.1 premiere done in October at the Rocky Mountain Audiofest in Colorado. Julie Skaggs from "A Fleeting Glimpse" was invited by James Guthrie to attend and has an excellent write-up of the event here - http://www.pinkfloydz.com/wywhsacd.htm Guthrie noted at the event that the 5.1 mixes of WYWH were done all from the analog tapes like DSOTM, so that contradicts what Alan was saying in the post above.
