People were very excited like a month ago when it was announced over in the Criterion thread. But yes, I will be getting these for sure.

Word Todd!!!!

May be old news, but I do not read the Criterion thread, I feel they are kind of overrated and too pricey, though there are a few exceptions.

Both of these films deserve a thread of there own!

How on earth are they overrated when the "average person" probably hasn't heard of more than three of them I think you're getting mixed up with the latest hollywood remake sequel.

What? Overrated and too pricey? Have you watched every single film in the collection to say that their titles are overrated? Why do you think they're overrated, is it the company, or just the movies they hold? Their prices are higher because they are a small company, and put a heck of a lot of effort into restoring these films, and a lot of them aren't really well known in North America. Their special features are also pretty impressive, which makes the price worth it.

Criterions go on sale quite a bit, in fact, there's a sale in a week and a half at B&N, where they drop to 50% off the MRSP. If you're a B&N member, it's even cheaper because you get free shipping and/or can potentially stack coupons to get them for under 20 bucks.

Amazon also puts a bunch on for around 20-25 bucks too. Right now, an OOP title, Pierrot Le fou is 19.99 right now for the BD on Amazon.

Also, Marketplace sellers have new and used copies fairly cheap. Criterions are really not that much more expensive than the latest blockbuster, if you know where to look.

One of the first things I did after moving to Japan was to rent these films (as many Suzuki films as I could find) and "replace" my Criterion DVDs with the anamorphic domestic releases. There are a lot of films in the Japanese new wave - of this style - that have never even been released domestically on home video. If you are patient, the premium movie networks in Japan are a treasure trove for film fans (NHK BS2 has its fair share as well). So much of this content would otherwise never see the light of day. I applaud Criterion for their efforts, but they will have to dedicate an "Eclipse" line of Blu just to Japan to even crack the surface. And I think it would be worth it.

Yes you are. No explosions, no sale. I'm not excited because I have not seen either of these films. That may change once I see them.

My body is ready.

Does anyone know why Youth of the Beast wasn't released as well?

All great movies you listed.

That explanation makes sense, but I'm worried that Youth of the Beast will get lost in the shuffle since it's the least popular of the three. I'd really like to see Fighting Elegy get a release too.
