Excellent. IFC/MPI did not bother to release it on Blu-ray. I was going to get he French disc, but Amazon.fr stopped selling it. Will do my best to have a review for the site.
By the way, I am also planning to pick up the original film. Has anyone tested the DVD? How is the restoration? I would love to know how good the English subtitles are as well. Pro-B |

The English subtitles are fine -- in my experience, only some of the earlier KFA releases had problematic subs; everything I've seen from them over the past couple of years has been good. The restoration is imperfect because two reels had to be sourced from a English-subtitled print, and they had the choice of either keeping the hardsubs or trying to erase them digitally. They decided to do the latter, but the result is that the bottom section of the screen has a weird "swimmy" look -- sort of like the blocky artifacts you get when watching a slightly damaged DVD -- and the outline of the English subs still occasionally pokes through. There's a restoration featurette on the disc that provides some interesting comparisons, and the bilingual booklet details the process. That aside, the film looks better than most of the other Korean films I've seen from the period, including other KFA releases. Personally I much prefer the original to the remake, although the two are very different animals (not surprising, since Im said he didn't even really like the original).

Aw, thought it was the original... oh well.
Korean Film Archive's DVD is very good. I have most of KOFA's DVDs and this is one of the best ones. dvdbeaver review |

Excellent news! I had always hoped this would get an English friendly Blu-ray release.

I really wish IFC would release more titles on BD since it would have been much cheaper than importing. Oh well~
I really enjoyed this film, mainly because of Jeon Do-yeon, who was amazing as usual. I've yet to watch the original Housemaid though, which is a shame. |
