Steam Hacked, Credit Card Data Potentially At Risk

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I use paypal with them but did change my passwords just in case...

I never use my credit card with them either. I use paypal of which the password would never be stored on their end so it's fine for me.

Steam password changed though. Apparently Gabe will be giving out free copies of Portal 2 and Dota 2 to ease the pain.

As the the forums, it's the perfect oppurtunity to never use them again. So many steam elitist jerks on there.

Yeah... some people can be kinda jerkish... and the other part is bread that hasn't quite cooked long enough in the oven and usually those two don't get along well.

Oh free copy of Dota 2 wont hurt my feelings much, through this should hopefully take sony out of the headlines now that another major distributor been hurt. One could hope...

And you're right about the forums, especially the Half-Life 2: Episode 2 section. People are insane in there.

All seriousness aside im only slightly more terrified this time around.. I guess I kinda have slightly less trust with valve to start with.. but this action does not threaten the stability of my glass house.

For those that ask what is my glass house its the only thing that allows me to sleep at night, the false sense of safety.

The idea that one person or a group of persons could ruin my life reputation, and destroy my future mearly for lolz.. in probably less time then it takes me to create a digital form written in formcalc... and I do my best to not think about it and use all the blankets of protection... doesn't matter there in the walls my fortress has fallen due to foolishness.

Maybe I could save myself by disappearing for 20 so odd years then start fresh with castle and surround it with walls (fake email accounts and persona..) nah that sounds like too much work..

I guess my downfall will be my laziness...

Steam Guard did what it was designed for. If you want keep your existing password you still can. They still can't login to your account without the code that would be sent to your email account to validate their machine.

Don't believe everything you read. It's mostly written by paranoid tinfoil hat wearing idiots.

Yes it's true Origin scans your pc buy only your program files and only the file names. Files aren't opened or sent to EA. Should this be optional like it is for Steam and tons of other programs? Of course. It's not the end of the world though either.
