Question Raintree County

What do you think about to get "Raintree County" (1957, with Montgomery Clifft, Elizabeth Taylor) on blu-Ray, maybe with alternate (14 min longer) Road Show Version?

Its maybe not the best movie but the first one who was shoot in MGM Camera 65 mm (the same like "Ben Hur").

Although historically important as the first movie produced in the MGM Camera 65 process (which several years later after the release of Ben-Hur (1959) was renamed as Ultra Panavision 70) Raintree County was actually never released in a 70mm format - regretably only a 35mm release. Too many comparisons with Gone With The Wind (1939) have not helped over the years either, even being titled "Gone With The Wind for the CinemaScope generation." Not very fair but the critics were not kind. Will we see this on Blu-Ray? I'm sure Raintree County will not be overlooked. I would be surprised to see it any time soon though. If restored from 65mm negatives and the investment managed with care it would be wonderful to see this classic viewed the way it was meant to be seen. If this is worthwhile, I, for one. would not mind the wait. Wouldn't you?

I asked about Raintree County on Warner Archive and they said "Raintree still being considered for BD but no movement, so definitely not in 2012. We continue to campaign to our colleagues to take the BD approach on this epic. Given length, the 65mm source original, and the footage cut from the roadshow version existing only in faded 35mm print material. there is no way to approach Raintree without a LOT of $$$."

Raintree County sounds promising though. Time to spend attention to detail and careful investment in valuable resources left to work with is the key to most successful film restoration efforts. Hopefully it will not be rushed. It will be worth waiting for.

I hope they bring it out restored on Blu-Ray. I would'nt buy a cheapy DVD without any subtitles (because I'm hard hearing) from Warner Archive.

So, since Warner has announced many of its big releases for 2013, i guess No Raintree County for that year too, right? :-(
