Surprised no one has created an official thread for this film yet, so I decided to create my own. Hope I got it right.

I hear this is getting a digibook...

Probably my favorite war film of all time, along with Grand Illusion (if one considers that a war film). Admittedly not a genre I'm huge on, but I'm certainly looking forward to this release and am glad to see some Golden Age Best Picture winners coming to blu.

Glad to see the recently-found silent version is going to be included as a bonus, too.

Updated the OP to include a better cover from Bill Hunt. Notice that it does have some 100th-anniversary-themed elements in common with the To Kill a Mockingbird cover.

Since MGM has now tentatively confirmed Rebecca & Annie Hall for 1/24 in the U.S. as well as Canada (The Apartment is still announced only for Canada), this now makes six Best Picture winners (three in B&W) hitting U.S. BD in a span of four weeks:
  • 1/24: Wings, Rebecca, Annie Hall
  • 1/31: The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love
  • 2/14: All Quiet on the Western Front
(And 2/7 ain't a let-up day either; that's Lady and the Tramp. )
BD players: PS3 Slim 250GB; Sherwood BDP-5004 & Insignia NS-BRDVD4 (both region-free); HP P7-1010 w/ LG WH12LS38K, AMD HD 6570, TMT 3, 5 & 6, PDVD 11, Nero 11

Thumbs up

I can finally retire my LD. IMO one of the three greatest movies ever. I have never seen the silent version. Although I don't know why hardly anyone will need the DVD and digital copy (yes kiddies, you get to watch a war movie on the tiny screen in the minivan). I also don't like digibooks, but I won't be able to wait for a standalone version. I want this one too bad.

It says Aspect Ratio is 1.2:1~~~What is that? Like 1.33 but a tad bit smaller?

Picture watching something on a 4:3 tv, with barely-noticable bars on the sides.

Just slightly narrower than 1.33:1.

Yeah, it's just the space taken up by the soundtrack in the 1.37:1 film frame. Occurred for the first few years of the sound era before they adjusted cameras/projectors to have the soundtrack outside the 1.37:1 picture image.

Just to add a bit of paranoia...from PR Newswire

Quote:
Relive the drama, conflict and power of one of the most influential anti-war films ever made with All Quiet on the Western Front, now on Blu-ray™ for the first time ever featuring perfect hi-def picture and perfect hi-def sound. This remarkable digitally remastered and fully restored edition is available for a limited time on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, including DVD and Digital Copy and debuts on February 14, 2012, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
Guess that means its a bit of a gamble waiting for sale prices.
US/UK films that need to be on blu-ray:Foreign Correspondent (1940, Hitchcock), The Wicker Man (1973, Hardy), Thunderheart (1992, Apted) , Lone Star (1996, Sayles)

Foreign films that need to be on blu-ray:
Raise The Red Lantern (1991, Zhang), The Best of Youth (2003, Giordana), Still Life (2006, Jia), 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007, Mungiu)

Yes, that is disturbing. I wonder if it means that they will then just have a standalone BD?

Definitely getting this (and Wings). Two very early "best picture" winners I've never seen.

Wish I saw this when it was first posted on Amazon. Difference between $27.99 pre-order and $35.99. I think I'll wait just a little bit, but definitely getting this digibook version.

Almost accurate; the AR of silent films was 1.33:1 (4:3), not 1.37:1. 1.37:1 was called "Academy ratio" because it was devised by AMPAS in 1932 (when it was still essentially a company union) as a way to restore an AR similar to silent film within the space left when the original 1.33:1 silent frame was compromised by the addition of the soundtrack. 1.2:1 (or 1.19:1) is the 1.33:1 silent frame minus the soundtrack.
