Question Vidocq

Anyone know if ANYWHERE has a Blu-Ray release of VIDOCQ with English Subtitles? Love this film and have hoped from day one for it to appear.Blu-Ray would certainly do justice to its visual style.

There is a German Blu-ray but it is Region B. I'm not sure where you live, but you would have to have a region free player to play it in North America. There is also a Japanese release that you could possibly import and have work in a North American player from Amazon.co.jp (use Google translate to navigate the site). Possibly could import it from another site as well. I haven't heard anyone on the forum importing the Japanese release and would love to hear impressions on it if someone has.

Thanks for that Nate. I'd heard of the German release but i dont think it has English subtitles. Same with the Japanese release. Do you know if they have?

Hmm well according to this it does have english subs: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Vidocq-Blu-ray/20840/

Again search for it at Amazon.co.jp, and then use the translate feature. That site claims it has an english subtitle as well. Don't know anyone who has pulled it over yet. Good luck and if you decide to do it, post back with how it goes.

Hmm, all the Amazon stock is currently gone. Currently around $23 American used or $64 American new. I'll have to keep checking to see if they get any back in stock. Or maybe check elsewhere.

I'm confused - why would you not buy it for 23 bucks used? Do they ship to USA? If you don't want to order it used, can you send me the link for that?

All the Amazon used sellers are Japan only (as they tend to be).

If you really want it you might try a remailing service, it will add a fair amount to the price however.

AAAAghhh!! This is so annoying!!
Thanks for the info folks. I really like this film and might actually consider getting it,even at the pretty hefty price, if I can find it. The Japanese version seems like a possibility but I can't seem to find out a definite answer on the English subs issue. Some companies list it as Japanese subs only, others list as no subs at all.
I don't fancy forking out a small fortune to end up with a version with no English subs and can't find anywhere with it in stock to E-mail and ask!

I don't have this disc to check, but I am convinced that the info submitted by Knifethrower in the database is incorrect - the Japanese DVD release did not have English subs. Therefore, I would strongly recommend that you do NOT order the disc.

The French 2DVD set by TF1 had optional English subs. I had it in my library (I also had the Canadian release). Naturally, I would suggest that you wait for TF1 to release the film on Blu-ray in France if you are not fluent in French, as more than likely they will also include the optional English subs from the DVD.

Knifethrower, may I ask where you obtained the info that the Japanese Blu-ray has English subs? Do you own the disc? Or was the info submitted in error? I ask because I know how TF1 operate and they do not allow parallel optional English subtitles on French films/productions licensed from them that are meant to be distributed in non-English language markets.

Amazon JP's page lists English subtitles but that is incorrect. The Japanese release only has Japanese subtitles. I checked around.

It was off the product listing for the disc on the Sony Japan website, its been removed now as its seemingly out of print. It listed English subs, I trusted them at face value (and so did a lot of Japanese retailers it seems).

I feel really foolish about this, this issue came up on another forum as well (based on my posting here) and a user pointed out that they had already checked the disc (finding no English subtitles) in 2008.
