Overrated to me means when a movie I think is crap is loved by a boatload of critics and cinephiles. Hugo and Melancholia fit that definition. Of course financial success can play a role, but that wasn't the case here.

For 2011, everyone I purchased turned out to be pretty good. I was lucky last year. The only time I went to the theater in 2011 was to see Hugo. That was a waste of $21.00.

Most of the replies here are more "movies you disliked" than overrated.

May not be that highly praised, but "Crazy, Stupid, Love". Everyone here loves it. I don't know why. I love Emma Stone and Marisa Tomei, but this film wasn't good.

Yeah I don't believe some people realize what overrated or even 'rated' means...Sucker Punch, Green Lantern, and The Hangover Part II were not highly thought of films in the first place: many of you are quite with the majority when you opine that these films are lackluster. That belongs on a worst films of the year thread.

This. Super 8 was about as bleh as you can get. No tension, no real development, a forced love thing, ugh....

Tree of Life is just another Malick screen saver with No plot, No story or story arc, and nothing else of any value. Hes a screen-saver maker, NOT a film maker!

Ok, I'm gonna have to step in. Mallick is one of the best film makers of our era.
The way he can speak with visuals and subtle sounds and make use our BRAINS is genius. He movies leave space for us to meditate and ponder on what we are seeing, I bet you love Bay, that takes you on a "high" with Explosions, CGI and Bad acting. I don't hate Bay, i think he's great at what he does, just a mere example. But just because you don't "get" something doesn't mean it's bad. I think we all have our opinions,and i respect that, but I had to speak out on this one. A film is an artform, and he makes masterpieces.

The Darkest Hour I just thought was a bad movie with nothing really appealing to keep the viewer interesting, though I predicted it was going to be bad the first time I saw the trailer, but I had free passes to a screening the day before it came out.

Agreed that the movie as a whole is overrated, but I did enjoy Melissa McCarthy's performance, she was the only reason I survived the film. Her performance had more depth than pinewood is giving her credit for, and she's funnier than Galifinakis.

I liked The Descendants. I wouldn't say it was a Best Picture winner type of a movie, but it's status as the frontrunner says more about the other releases than it does this one.

To be fair this thread is about films one finds overrated, which strongly lends itself to unqualified opinion. I'm with the many on this thread that found The Tree of Life to be one of 2011's overrated films, and I certainly 'get' what Malick was doing, as do many, many others here who are of the same opinion. We just did not enjoy it for whatever variety of reasons. I've opined elsewhere about what I find fault with in the picture so I'll leave it there.

Thor - I don't understand how this was so critically acclaimed and Green Lantern so maligned, when many of the problems said to be in Lantern are also in this movie

Thor was a goofball loser and the characters looked deformed?
(Well, I'll grant you, Thor DID nonsensically leave out the most interesting villain and frustratingly tease him at the end, but still...)

Exactly: Calling Tree of Life "overrated" is NOT the same as calling (Insert Worst Movie Here) "overrated"--It's more a matter of the Emperor, his underwear, and more than one kid in the crowd laughing.
If this was last year's list for example, Tim Burton's Alice would be topping the list by a landslide
