to me there's a fine line between a grainy gritty look and an annoying amount of grain, and I feel sleepy hollow crossed that line. from what i've been told that's how it looked in the theater, but I liked the hd cable broadcast of it more.

Yes, the reviewers tend to disagree with the 2 of you. I just read a recent article that specifically called out "Sleepy Hollow" and praised it for not eliminating the intended grain. The formats role, in his mind, is to preserve the creator's intention, not to clean up beyond that intention.

I just don't like the way the picture image jumps around. That stopped me from re-watching on BD.

weird...are there different transfers (maybe from different manufaturers?) for this disc (a la 5th Element) for this disc? I thought SH looked awesome on my rig.

It appears the UK version maybe (if there is a UK version). The US version is not, IMO.

You know, I really love Sleepy Hollow and have for quite some time. The picture really is quite detailed during certain scenes and I remember there being a TON of grain in the theater. You cannot really fault the transfer when it's the source material that has all the imperfections. One of the downsides to HiDef is that it picks up every flaw.

the grain and the look of the film are ENTIRELY intentional.
If you don't like it, plenty of other flicks to watch. If it's how Burton wanted it to look, it's good enough for me. (and it is, btw...) |

you wouldn't be missing out if you were only watching it in 720p.

This is what I wrote it on the comments section last night:
Movie : 5 Video : 4.5 Audio : 4.5 Extras : n/a Overall : 4.5 Don't listen to the negative reviews I heard this movie was supposed to have a bad picture quality, well it hasn't it's great?...I don't know why anyone would say it hasn't to be honest. The film is shot in a Hammer Horror type style which is where maybe people are getting confused, or maybe they have their Blu Ray and TV set up improperly?...As I said I have no idea. I loved the Movie itself, always have. The sound is spot on. Maybe the negative comments are being left by people who don't appreciate Tim Burtons unique style, that's all I can put it down to. If you liked the movie, buy it and you won't be disappointed, at least I wasn't. The Blu ray is a huge upgrade making the DVD obsolete. |
