Default Sub Crawl questions

Hey guys, i just hae a couple of quick questions regardint the sub crawl technique.

If you have 2 subs, once you find the perfect spot for the first one, where do you put the second one?

Also, what material is recommended to use for the bass? I am assuming that you need a good bass track that runs for a good few minutes to give you enough time to go around the room. What is recommended and where can i obtain it?

Thanks,
Dan

Why not get the Perfect Bass Kit and forget all about guessing with the sub crawl? You can measure you room and find the best spot for each sub without having to guess. Paradigm has dropped the price to $99 from the $300 that I paid when it first came out.

You could even see if your dealer has one that they'll lend you. With this tool available to you the guessing and amateur techniques are no longer needed. It'll give you precise measurements and eq you subs to get the best out of them in your room. If your using any type of room correction on your avr or pre/pro run that after you have used the PBK.

I actually have the PBK (got it with the first sub). I am also running an old Yamaha HTR6190 (to be upgraded hopefully soon to an MRX). I currently have both subs in the fron of the room, between the center and fronts for each. There doesn't seem to be much bass for some reason. Even after PBK and the YPAO setup. So i figured i would try the sub crawl and see if it is the placement that is the issue.

Just an FYI, but right now i am running everything in an unfinished basement (basically cement walls and floors) which i know plays a big roll, but i still feel that i should be getting more than what i am.

I'm a basshead, so i'm kinda thinking my way is not the perfect way.
What is each sub SPL'ed at? I find that having each at 75db, just isn't enough.

Before, when I had my Onkyo 805, I would spl each at about 85db's. I have upgraded to the Onkyo 5008 and now I have them at 80db's each. I would make these adjustments after running the calibration program.

What you should do is, get a movie that is LFE heavy, and just turn up your db inside the AVR one or two db's at a time until your happy. Using the same scene from that movie to test each increment increase.
Main Theater Setup:
(Panasonic 65" HDTV) (Onkyo 5008) (Onkyo M-282) (PS3 Slim 250gb)(XBOX360 4GB)
(Monitor Audio - RX2's - (4)RXFX - RX CENTER) (SVS - (2)PB12 Plus) (Harmony 1100) (Monster HDP-2400)
Bedroom Setup:
(Samsung LN40B610) (Onkyo 805) (Sony BDP-S570)(Monster HDP-1800)
(Klipsch - F2's - C2 - Quintet III's) (Personal built 10" Sub) (Harmony 880)

I might try that as well. Unfortunately i dont have an SPL meter (or at least a proper one. I have the JL Audio SPL meter on my i-Phone) but i dont think it worls properly.

I am planning on watching Jurassic Park Blu Ray with my wife (she has never seen it for some odd reason) and when that T-Rex scene comes on, i want it to rumble like crazy. I want to Feel it in my gut. Oh, and her too. lol.

I haven’t bought that one yet, but I do know what you mean. I love how mine feel, sound is another thing, but it's how they feel is my reason for loving them.

Your I-phone may not be perfect, but it will give you an idea. Since you don't have a proper SPL meter, then try the 1 or 2 increment increase until happy. Once you are there, make sure to test it out on a few other movies. When I done it that way before, it was times that I had to turn it down abit.

If you noticed I said 85db's with the 805, but 80db's with the 5008.

I don't know what your room looks like but the best position for two subs is the half-way point on both side walls or the front & rear walls.

Your YPAO doesn't handle sub setup properly. Check your configuration and the sub is probably set to -10 db. Reduce the gain on the sub and rerun YPAO until the Sub is at 0 db correction. You might have to do it a few times. Once done, set the sub's gain back to 50%. Do manual adjustments for personal preference from there. If you google YPAO and sub setup you'll find many with similar problems.
