Default 28 Weeks Later (Blu-ray) Review

http://www.dvdreview.com/reviews/pages/2698.shtml

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is now delivering a high definition version of "28 Weeks Later" on blood-curdling Blu-Ray Disc. The result is every bit as amazing as you would expect it to be. Given the nature of the film and the deliberate grittiness of the images, one would expect a high definition presentation that would be a mixed blessing. But not so! The image is razor sharp and the grain found in the picture is reproduced perfectly to create this incredibly harsh look of the movie. Instead of fuzzing up the picture the grain is so sharply defined that it is essential to the presentation. There are scenes, of course, where the filmmakers went for a very clean and smooth look and these sequences are equally nicely reproduced. The colors are rich and vibrant, creating a world that looks devastatingly desolate, yet at the same time shows signs of life sprucing up. Black levels are amazing in the transfer making sure the film reproduces the full contrast range of the original imagery with deep solid blacks and well-defined shadows.

To increase the visceral impact of the film, this Blu-Ray Disc also comes with a 5.1 channel DTS HD Master track that is encoded losslessly. As we all know by now, things just don't get any better than lossless audio and with that in mind, this track has been designed for maximum impact. Expect your bookshelves to rattle, your walls to shake when you run this track at a decent volume. The brutal bass extension and the dynamic range of the track will make you jump out of your seat more than once, giving you every bit of nerve wrecking entertainment you have been seeking when you picked out this disc.

Presented on a dual-layer disc, the release also offers up a number of cool bonus materials, starting with a commentary track by director/co-writer John Carlos Fresnadillo and co-producer Enrique López-Lavigne. This Spanish-born filmmaker may not have a Hollywood track record but he managed to capture the essence of the first film perfectly and tapped into it with such raw energy that the resulting film is quite an experience despite its shortcomings. The commentary offers more insight into the process and is recommended to all fans of the film.

You will also find some deleted scenes with optional commentary on the disc, together with tow featurettes, entitled "Code Red: The Making Of 28 Weeks Later" and "The Infected." Both of them are exciting and thrilling and well put together to offer additional insight. The same is true for the featurette "Getting Into The Action" which takes you onto the set, right in the midst of the shooting of the film and the frenzy going on there to create the kinetic scenes for the film.

The disc is rounded out by two animated chapters from "28 Days Later: The Aftermath" and the film's theatrical trailer.

I found that "28 Weeks Later" got my adrenaline pumping in a heartbeat. Not three minutes into the film and I was hooked. The story may have a few holes but overall the movie is a powerful entry in the horror genre and a worthy sequel to Danny Boyle's original shocker. The high definition version that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is delivering here is worth every penny, I promise you that.

their is grain, but it fits this film perfectly. the PQ is superb, and the SQ is great.

i got mine at walmart today for 29.99, so not a bad price either considering its a fox title.

All in all, a great title, plus you bitrate lovers will like this title as its almost always hovering above the 30mbps mark.

thanks

Unfortunately this seems to be yet another BD release that HDD unfairly marks down.

Are BD's judged to a stricter criteria than HD-DVD's?

Almost done watching it. Very impressed with it, PQ and SQ is superb. Not quite as eye-popping as FF:ROSS, but then again, it's not as colorful, so the Wow-factor isn't as much, but the transfer is super clean. The movie itself is pretty freakin' sweet too. The helicopter scene with the Infected was awesome.

Edit: I just read Bracke's review of this over at HDD. I'm pretty convinced now that he has no fuc*ing clue what he's talking about, and he's in HD-DVD's pocket. As another poster said, it's like they measure Blu-ray on a MUCH stricter scale. Bullshit.

You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you. They will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

here is a direct quote from his article too... "in all honesty there are sequences in '28 Weeks Later' where I forgot I was watching a Blu-ray and not just a very good-looking standard-def DVD."

Cool

I haven't seen this yet, but if its a review by Bracke, usually add a point for PQ and SQ for your own score.
You're in my spot...

I'm beginning to think this PBracke guy at high-def digest is a HD-DVD fanboy as well... I feel that he's shying away from giving Blu-ray movies a perfect score due to the fact that lately, HD-DVD PQ has been pretty crappy.

I was wondering that as well. I haven't opened up either of the two movies (days or weeks) because of the review I read for 28WL. I've read several others that said it was great. I may rent and then decide [as $5< is cheaper than $35].

Yes but renting will add $5 to the total of your movie. I suggest you buy Weeks...it's definitely worth it.

He's just going to return the unopened blurays, but I agree. In fact buy both. I wouldn't have the will power to send them back!!!

My wife came home after work and she had something in plastic bag, she had brought "Almighty Evan" for my daughter and she pulled something else in the bag and it was "28 weeks later" on BD.. I was going to buy on Tuesday but,we did not have money, and she brought it today! Surprised me because she is not big fan of BD because of the cost. Very thoughtful of her!!

I will repost after we watch the movie and give you guys my opinions on the movie. Be back within 2 hours.

The Bracke review pissed me off as well. I know he is a rampant HD-DVD fanboy, but he must be out of his mind....

Both the PQ and SQ of 28 Weeks Later was awesome. I did notice that there were some parts of the movie that didn't look so hot, but that was noticably due to the fact that the director changed what he was filming with, because the entire image changed.

I get so tired of his reviews, I know I shouldn't read them but they are awful propaganda, and people that are actually on the fence might take them to heart and really listen to what he has to say....

"Again, aesthetically, it suits the material, but in all honesty there are sequences in '28 Weeks Later' where I forgot I was watching a Blu-ray and not just a very good-looking standard-def DVD"

That statement alone deserves for him to have his review priviledges completely revoked.

Complete and utter BS.

What can I SAY? Im speechless and I truly loved the movie! The transfer and everything on the movie was awesome! Worth paying 29 dollars... Grain in the movie is not bad as some people thought it were. The firebomb was sooo awesome! I'd recommend this movie for anyone!

I had fun scaring my 10 year old daughter when i knew zombie would come and scare people. She jumped when i scared her!

GOOD MOVIE!!
