Glad to see this finally making its way to BD. People kept saying it didn't come out at the same time as The Towering Inferno because Fox was looking for the original 6-track audio. I wonder if they found it or just gave up.
I hope all the extras from the 2-disc DVD are ported over, as was the case with Inferno. |

I also wonder why this release, and some of the later video releases, use a photo on the front that is not from the film. It's not even of the Queen Mary, the ship that doubled for the Poseidon, and of which a huge 20 ft model was built for the FX scenes (which is now at the San Pedro Maritime Museum).
Nope, for some reason this BD has a model on the cover that someone built of the SS United States. A ship that looks nothing like the Queen Mary SS United States: Queen Mary: ![]() SS Poseidon:

The best disaster flick of the 70's even surpassing the great Airport '75 and The Towering Inferno
Linda Roggo: "Where have you been?" Mike Roggo: "Where do you think? Flying around on my ass!" The whole idea of a cruise ship "flipping over" and having to make your way to the bottom of the boat going upward to survive is simple yet brilliant. |

Thank goodness this is getting a US release! I just cancelled my flight to France on April 4th! Now all I have to do is drive 7 miles to Wal-Mart! This is THE movie I have been waiting for on blu ray! I've seen it at the show in 70mm and six track stereo, owned a twenty minute version on super 8 sound film, vhs, ced, laser disc, dvd and now blu ray! I read where it has a 4.0 surround sound. I think that is what The Towering Inferno has, TTI doesn't have alot of surround but still sounds great! And yes, a double feature with TPA and TTI! Oh, yeah! At the end of Poseidon, an orange and white helicopter flies off the upside down hull and at the beginning of Towering, an orange and white helicopter flies to the top of the world's tallest building!! Like I said, this is the movie I bought a front projector for, "The Poseidon Adventure" as big (and loud) as I can show it!!

My history with The Poseidon Adventure goes back to an advance screening of it in the Fall of '72. Irwin Allen brought the movie up to Toronto (along with Ernest Borgnine), and unspooled it in the Ontario Film Theatre, which at the time was oriented more towards foreign and art house fare, as was its typical audience. So there was a 'reel' mixed bag in attendance that night. Even the artsy-fartsy component seemed to really enjoy it, although their reaction would naturally be more reserved. But you could just feel it...as you always can...when a movie is working, and has everyone by the throat. This was not your standard Hollywood big name glamour fest. Everyone got totally messed up. And stars were dying! What was happening here? By the end credits, the applause from those who 'got' it was so strong you could barely hear John Williams' score. After the Q & A, I managed to get to Allen personally for a few minutes, and shook his hand (I'd always been a big Voyage fan). Initially, he seemed a bit subued, even concerned about the showing. Allen had a lot personally riding on this movie, and thought some of the audience response was polite, but not wildly enthusiastic. So I explained where he was..."You're in Canada. You're in Toronto (i.e. N.Y. 'lite'). And this is the Canadian film equivalent of the AFI." Even if folks loved it, you're not going to see them jumping on their seats like they would in Milwaukee. For us, this is 'going nuts' - it's going to be a huge hit." I'll never forget his next words, "You really think so?" It was obvious, after all he'd been through just to get this movie made - even raising millions privately when Fox balked at the budget - that the guy was obviously so close to this project that he wasn't sure himself anymore. Like many vet showmen, maybe Allen was just naturally a fretter, I don't know, but Borgnine was certainly chuckling over all this. I was mostly stunned that he still didn't seem to realize how good the picture actually was. Finally, I thanked him again for bringing it up to the Great White North - in those days we didn't get a lot of special advance showings like this - and that was it. Of course, the rest is boxoffice and movie history, but it always stuck with me how at the time The Poseidon Adventure was released, it was anything but a sure thing. In '72, at the height of Alt-culture influence in American entertainment, this $5 million dollar, star-studded survival adventure, was a big gamble. And it showed on Allen that night. Quickly looking at the title of this thread, I misread it. The Poseidon Adventure in 4x3... WHAT!

Anyone know for how long it will be a WM exclusive? I remember some of their other exclusives eventually became more widely available... just don't remember how long that took.

By that math, Fox will probably have it out mid-to-late Fall. |

Hey, ROclockCK! GREAT STORY! I know I've mentioned this a million times over the years on Poseidon posts, but I was an extra in the New Year's Eve party scene. I only filmed for about a week in April of 1972. I really didn't know what the movie was about, just what the other people were saying on the set. You know, a tidal wave hits the ship and it turns upside-down and people try to get to the top (bottom) to be rescued. I remember being at the movies and seeing the trailer for the first time. WOW! I think I yelled out . . I'm IN that movie! Or something stupid like that. I would still be a huge fan even if I wasn't in the movie, it's just a great film. And my Irwin Allen story was that he was very polite and walked around the set and asked us all if we were having a good time. He wanted a very happy set. I really saw him directing everybody more than Ronald Neame was. Now that I know the history of the movie and how hard Irwin fought to have it made AND his way, I'm glad it was the huge hit it was (and is). I too, am a huge Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea fan. I have the combo dvd of VTTBOTS and Fantastic Voyage, Both films would be great on blu ray! Happy watching on April 3!!! And "Don't Fall Over"
