All right, I decided to go to Monoprice's site and use their live chat support function. This was our brief conversation after I submitted my question about whether the player was all region for both DVDs and Blu-ray:

TS - Daniel M (Level 1): Hi xxxxxxx! Thank you for contacting Monoprice Tech Support.
TS - Daniel M (Level 1): My name is Daniel M. How are you doing today xxxxx?
Me: Good. Yourself?
TS - Daniel M (Level 1): Doing well.
TS - Daniel M (Level 1): From the email we've received this morning
TS - Daniel M (Level 1): the unit is region free
Me: For Blu-ray as well as DVD?
Me: If I order the player and it's unable to play a Region B Blu-ray, would I able to return it?
TS - Daniel M (Level 1): yes

The temptation grows ...

I'm not sure what your conversation confirmed here. Are you saying the rep said it is in fact region free as in 1,2,3, etc. for DVD and they are sure of this? Yet at the same time the company rep can't confirm if Blu-rays from other regions will play, but will let you send the unit back if it doesn't? Really? I don't have time for all that BS. The company rep needs to have the knowledge to say yes or no and not put the customer through the trouble.

I will say this, if it turns out to be a full functioning multi-region DVD/Blu-ray player it will be the most affordable option out there from what I've seen.

It all seemed pretty clear to me, but since I seem to be the only one willing to do a little legwork I went back and asked again, saying there was some confusion and I wanted to confirm the Blu-ray player can play Blu-rays from any region.

The response:

TS - Lamont M (Level 1): Ok me confirm
TS - Lamont M (Level 1): Yes it will play everything
TS - Lamont M (Level 1): No problem
Me: The player can play discs from all 6 DVD regions as well as all Blu-ray regions?
Me: I know they have different regions for DVD and Blu-ray.
TS - Lamont M (Level 1): yes
TS - Lamont M (Level 1): it will
Me: Great. Thank you very much.

Plus, per the previous conversation, we know we should be able to return the player if it doesn't play a disc from another region. And yes, I think that's an important thing to add considering many places have disclaimers saying they won't accept returns based on that.

As for the return part, that is true, but they won't pay to have it shipped back to them and you won't be refunded the original shipping, so on a $77 item you would be paying like 1/4 of the price in shipping for something you returned.

Thanks for getting those answers. To me that response was much more definitive than your previous back and forth.

I've been wanting a complete region free player for awhile now. If they cover the return shipping I'll bite. If they don't, which is most likely, I may still give it a shot, but I'm gonna have to think on it.

I just hate having to return stuff. It's a PITA!!!

Dear Monoprice, hook me up with a test player and I'll be able to confirm whether this is region free for Blu-rays or not. If it is, you'll get plenty of business from people here

TBH, I don't trust anything their CS says. I won't believe it until someone gets one and tests it out.

So who's the brave soul willing to do just that?

(if everyone gives me $5 I'll totally do it )

So does this not decode DTS-HD MA? Description says:
Quote:
The BDP-620 supports up to 1080p video and includes 3D video support! It can handle up to 7.1 channel audio output, including Dolby TrueHD™ and DTS-HD® High Resolution Audio.

Not sure. I recently purchased the Oppo 93 and I have no out of region discs that will not play on any of my current BD players...

I just think $77 for a region free player is killer. It would be a great second unit for those rare out of region discs.

If someone on here or AVS confirms that it is truly region free then I will pull the trigger without hesitation!

It's not their customer service person who is saying this. When I tried to go through customer service the second time, that person directed me to tech support. It *is* a difference worth noting; it's not like I went to ask the person in charge of handling returns.

For what it's worth, I've gone to their technical service people for a few different issues and questions (most recently HDMI handshake issues with a switch/splitter but also when I was setting up my outdoor theater). They have always been knowledgeable and given me great advice.

And I just decided f**k it and ordered one. If it doesn't work, I could still use a Blu-ray player for my bedroom. It *will* get used. I had some other things I was thinking about ordering from there anyway, so I just combined everything to save on shipping. I have one region-locked disc, so when it arrives next week, I'll have something I can test it with.

Thanks for taking the plunge, clckworang! There's at least one owner over at AVS forums but, so far, they haven't answered questions on BD region info or included apps.

It would also be nice to know if it actually handles DTS-HD Master Audio (as previously mentioned in some concerns above).

I'd definitely think about getting one if it is region free and handles all HD audio tracks.

Thanks again!
