they were all pretty good, the Monitor 1 v7 seem to be my favorite, especially when you figure in the price they cost. I thought the V7 bass to be slightly tighter then the v6 Atom and the highs were slightly more mellow on the top end, but not laidback. The 100s were very good, they do have a little bite on the top end, but not bright at all, a lot of bass comes from them, I only wished it was just a little tighter. The 100s were on a McIntosh IA, and the others on the entry level NAD IA and CDP. The Epos where the most laidback and least dynamic of them all, but the lady singing her voice seemed the most natural on the Epos. The 685s where the most balanced, but more veiled sounding then the others, not lacking detail, but warmish, and the atom(both) were just a bit tipped up. After it all, I noticed that the tone controls on the NAD were turned up so the highs were slightly tipped up a bit. This might have contributed to the slight edginess in the top end the Atoms had, but the v7s where smoother sounding overall. The looks of the v6 was the best IMO of all the little bookies I heard.

What's this? Steve didn't hate all the Digms he listened to? They didn't sound hollow? I found the same thing about the bass from the 100's, needed to be tighter on the low end when using them for two channel. They are the speaker that I've had the best results blending with a single subwoofer though, the bass is much tighter from them if they're not running full range and they have just the right amount of output in the 60-60hz range to meet the sub. The tweeter is the one thing that really bugged me about them, I'm sure using them with the SC-07 really didn't help their cause any. ![]() The Atom Monitors are a great little speaker when you consider how much they cost, I got mine for $250 tax in. They could be paired with an enrty level IA and CDP to make a nice little system for a small office or something for not much outlay of cash. They're not the best by any means but are descent. Maybe you should look into a used set of v6 Atoms to use as surrounds, they're much better than the Missions and can be had for about $150 or slightly less used. Now that they've been discontinued a new pair could be pretty cheap as well if you could find them. |

Do it Olivier, you won't be sorry!
![]() I did look at Audiogon the other day and there's a pair of Bryston mono's on there that were really tempting me. There is another guy selling a single one, I could get three of them for a pretty nice price.

From everything I've read it seems as if the Excites sound slightly better than then the Studio's but lack the dynamics the Digms are capable of. Neither speaker line are slouches and dependant on ones tastes either can be a good choice. I'd be interested in your thoughts of the big Digm center channels is you ever get the chance to hear one. |
