Default Phantasy Star Online 2 Vita - X-Platform Play with PC

Sony has announced a raft of new PS Vita games for launch in Japan.

Among them are Phantasy Star Online 2 which was previously a PC exclusive.

According to Andriasang, series producer Sakai Satoshi said the PC and Vita versions will be played on the same server, and you'll be able to play the same character on both versions.

In a video shown as part of Sony's PlayStation Vita Game Heaven announcements, game producer Sakai Satoshi also confirmed that Vita players will be adventuring alongside PC players on the same servers and will be able to play the same character on both versions.

Have a look at the announcement video below. There are snippets of gameplay in it, so keep your eyes peeled.

You know, I might actually give this a shot if it's free to play...and launches outside of Japan.

Still, it does seem a bit odd that it would release on Vita, but not its big brother, the PS3. Well, I guess that's what happens when handhelds start getting big in Japan.

My stance on Anime...I just can't understand any of it, everyone is either a 10 year old girl or a monster.

Well the Phantasy Star Portable games had pretty good sales for PSP, so i'm guessing Sega wanted to stay in that trend. Plus I don't know make the developing cost much more which is likely the reason why they wanted to make Valkyria Chronicles II and III to be for PSP instead of PS3 like the 1st game.

I think it reflects on the last actual Phantasy Star Game, Universe. The reason that Phantasy Star Universe bombed was that requirement to pay for a subscription fee; even if you were an Xbox live gold member, although you can play it with a silver account. I remember when it came out and almost everyone I know that played it only tried out the trial period (that you can restart). It's kind of disturbing when it really didn't offer much from the Dreamcast game Online that was free to use (However, I think Seganet had a subscription fee of it's own like Xbox live, but console gaming was at it's infancy anyway), it would have been a whole lot better if they'd at least let people make dedicated servers, and even a peer-to-peer system still be more ideal than subscription fees.

I think it was a mistake to not include a PS3 and Xbox 360 and have them both for cross play, although recently (off topic) Valve gutted cross play on Counter Strike: Global Offensive for PS3 support.

Well, just as long as there is no subscription fees (no way I'll commit to an MMO, let alone a Japanese flavored Diablo), forgiving game prices (and IMO I would love Steamworks support too), I might be looking forward to this.

An item transaction system will be how it'll make money, Andriasang reports.

In addition to the PC and PS Vita versions, an iOS and Android app will be released. This will just share data with the two main versions of the game, offering simpler character creation, a simple control experience, and social game elements.

The PC version is due out first, in "early summer". The smartphone version launches next, in winter 2012. The PS Vita version is due out in Japan in spring 2013. As previously revealed, the PC and Vita versions will be played on the same server, and you'll be able to play the same character on both versions.

The beta test begins in late April in Japan.

Phantasy Star Online 2 U.S. and Europe release PC version delayed. Does that mean Sega is considering the Vita version as well or is it just a normal delay?

Quote:
Phantasy Star Online 2's release in North America has been delayed, Sega shared in a statement with Polygon today.

"Originally slated for an early 2013 launch, Sega can officially confirm that PS02 has been delayed," a Sega spokesperson told Polygon. "We don't have any specifics but will update everyone as soon as there are more details to share."

Phantasy Star Online 2 is currently available in Japan on the PC and PlayStation Vita. Sega plan to release the PC version in the U.S. and Europe.
