Default Walmart Entertainment’s Disc-to-Digital Service Powered by VUDU

New service announced today. Sounds interesting:

Walmart Entertainment’s Disc-to-Digital Service Powered by VUDU: How it Works
The process to convert previously-purchased DVD/Blu-ray movies to digital copies is quick and simple:

•Bring your movie collections from the participating studio partners – Paramount, Sony, Fox, Universal and Warner Bros. – to your local Walmart Photo Center.
•A Walmart associate will help you create a free VUDU account.
•Tell the associate how you’d like your movies converted:
◦Convert a standard DVD or Blu-ray movie for $2; or,
◦Upgrade a standard DVD to an HD digital copy for $5.
•Walmart will authorize the digital copies and place them in your VUDU account. No upload is necessary, and you get to keep your physical discs.
•Log onto VUDU.com from more than 300 Internet-connected devices to view movies any time, any place.

Walmart Entertainment supports UltraViolet, the movie industry's initiative currently in its beta phase that allows consumers to put their purchased movies into a cloud-based digital library and keep track of them safely and securely. Walmart is able to offer customers the ability to watch and purchase UltraViolet-enabled titles directly from VUDU.

Interesting, not sure it is worth 2 bucks if you have the blurays, but interesting none the less. Wonder if it works for 3D blus too

Then again, if you just have the dvd then 5 bucks for an hd copy is better than 10 for the blu if you like digital

Wouldn't work too well for blurays if you don't have a bluray drive :P

So these can allow you to watch your movies from any internet connection without worrying about the FBI knocking on your door?

if the FBI comes knocking on your door from ripping your own discs we've officially lost it and the RIAA and MPAA are running the police department lol.

Well he already bought the content on once. Why should he have to buy the same content twice?

Yo, think outside the box. When available, instead of buying the 2 disc set with a DC for $19.99 you can buy the 1 disc version for $14.99 and spend $2 for the Walmart DC. That's an option.

Sure you'll save $2 per movie but you'll get 5 years and what, $250k fine for every movie in your 'Handbrake' collection. Not worth the risk IMO.

actually no, you are not allowed to break the encryption (that's the catch 22) but you ARE allowed a backup. meaning they can't bust you for HAVING them in your collection. they have to catch you RIPPING it or Downloading it. thus making it a near un enforceable rule

It doesn't say anything about needing the case. What's to stop people from getting movies from bbv or redbox and boom 3 dollar dvd quality copy or 6 dollar HD copy. If the employee doesn't look for the barcode on the inside then that is cheap copies of movies.

Maybe it is just me, but I personally would rather have physical discs. I can see why people would prefer the convience of digital copies but when I buy a digital movie I just feel like I don't actually own it. I need a "supported" device to play it on my tv or I have to plug my computer into the tv. While you may not have the clutter of discs, I still say DVD's or blu-rays give you much more freedom than a digital copy of the film from a website.
It's on random.

Good point. But for all those that are not thinking outside the box and are caught up on "I already own the movie" - one could borrow Blu-ray movies from a buddy, etc. and take them in and boom - a HD copy of a title you don't even own at all for $2.

Hey wormraper, can I borrow some of those 1592 BD titles you got lying around.

Honestly I don't see a problem with this. Vudu has a LOT of movies in HD that aren't available in HD yet on blu-ray, It's a good way to upgrade now for 1080p HD. This is especially good if you have no room and you like streaming.

I really like this idea. I don't think $2 is too much to ask for and I think it would be great to have my movies available on my Xbox and my phone. As long as its HDX they are offering then I will be very happy.
Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and things with... molecular structures

I'm sure there will be some that try that, but looks like they're thinking ahead....

...they will "stamp" the disc in the middle to prevent people from getting 2 conversions out of a disc.

Like the idea of your discs getting "marked"? You can read additional news & details about this new program at Home Media Magazine:
