Arrow Comparison of Studio Ghibli Blu-ray Releases

!!!UNDER CONSTRUCTION!!!

UPCOMING RELEASES

JP:
US: Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, The Wind Rises
UK: Spirited Away, Hayao Miyazaki Box Set, The Wind Rises, The Wind Rises (Collector's Edition)

I've created this thread simply to point out which Studio Ghibli release is the best one. There are a ton of distributors for these films and this thread should clear whatever problems might arise in case anyone is interested in buying a particular edition of a movie. Every contribution from any country is welcome!

If you're not too familiar with the differences between the different editions of Ghibli films, I suggest you take a look at the General Rules / Tips / Notes / Guideline

The rest of you, please provide whatever valid info you can. Screenshots, extras, cover art, booklet art, unboxing videos; anything is necessary and welcome. I will list the differences on the first post. Don't be ashamed to ask for anything. Thanks for reading!

Index:
I will mark in bold which part of which edition is better.
Bold is for the next best entry (why that is should be explained in either the picture quality's section or the conclusion)
The parts marked with bold are not recommended (the reasons will/should be stated)
The parts in bold have been reported but confirmation is welcome.
Bold stands for "only available in this version" and will mainly refer to extras.
Bold is for errors and missing info both of which happened because of the server failure. Most correspond to Blu-ray.com posts that were linked.

1) Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
BDInfo: JP, US, UK,/AU, HK, DE

Picture Quality: Japanese / US / HK comparison, Japanese/UK edition comparison (1, 2)
JP: AVC @ 39548 kbps
US: AVC @ 24100 kbps [lower bit-rate than JP (indistinguishable in motion)], only has the English dub credits
UK/AU: AVC @ 31172 kbps, DNR (slight loss in high-frequency detail), slight color change compared to JP + US,
HK: AVC @ 25000 kbps, tiny crop on each side of the picture, a nearly unnoticable boost in contrast, odd subtitles *
DE: AVC @ 23994 kbps

Audio Quality:
JP: Japanese LPCM 2.0 @ 2304 kbps, English DD 2.0 @ 256 kbps (Disney's 2005 mix)

Reviews:
UK: The Digital Fix

Conclusion:
Picture: The JP / US Bu-rays are indistinguishable in motion so I'd say that both are winners here. The HK version is also pretty good (minus some problems) but the subtitles are an annoyance.
Audio: If you're interested only for the JP audio, I'd suggest the JP release. If you want both versions in lossless, the US release is your friend.
Extras: The US release does not contain the excellent audio features. The Japanese release does not contain the 12-minute interview with Miyazaki and the Behind the Microphone feature but it contains the mini-book and AR (afureko) recording script. If you're not interested that much in the interview, script and mini-book, I suggest the UK release.

Conclusion:

21) The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013)
Not available yet

General Rules / Tips / Notes / Guideline:
- The Japanese releases which are not digital have a lot of grain (unless stated otherwise).
- The UK/AU versions are identical and have no to minimal grain (unless stated otherwise).
- The US versions have grain but due to the lower bitrate, it's less apparent than the JP releases and they are nearly indistinguishable in motion.
- The subtitles section is to address whether the subtitles are dubtitles or subtitles. I will add whichever language you want me to, as long as we have info which is which. Subtitle language options are available in the database
- The JP releases have various promotional material for each film. The titles of each will not be entirely accurate (TV Spot / Theatrical trailer / Promo film / etc)
- The JP releases are Digibooks, they are very expensive and (usually) region-free. Supplemental material usually does not carry subtitles (this is hard to confirm, be sure to check with others before buying)
- HK releases are most of the time similar to the JP releases in terms of PQ (see Ponyo though - there are exceptions), they are cheaper but do not contain English dubs (subs are included). Region coding varies [unless stated otherwise]
- For people who don't care about money I'd recommend the Japanese edition. This edition usually also comes with an abundance of extra language options [German, French, Mandarin, Cantonese etc] (see the database for individual titles)
- For people who want value-for-money / English localization (whatever that entails) I'd recommend the US edition -> very good PQ (lower bit-rate than JP) + AQ and good extras (be careful of subtitles vs. dubtitles)
- For people who want value-for-money / English localization / don't like grain / better bonuses / don't want to wait for the US editions I'd recommend the UK releases -> DNR'ed but very good PQ + AQ + usually better extras than the US version (DNR is not the rushed kind, see comparison pictures)
- If you have info about editions in different countries (Spain, Italy, Germany etc.), I will be very happy to include these entries. But bare in mind that this is not a list of every international release. We have an excellent database for this. There listing everything here is pointless if there is no extra info (the source of the film, audio options, extras etc) on the matter.

Would have been a massive bummer if this was lost.

I suppose I could re-post this as well.

Here's a comparison of the JP/US/HK (in that order) releases of Nausicaa:

Here's an example of what the subtitles look like on the HK release, there are no periods and there are quotation marks around random lines throughout:

I just got my Laputa BD in the mail and I couldn't be happier. Tried it out and surprisingly enough found that the dubtitles weren't bothering me at all, because they timed with the dialogue and I don't know enough Japanese to pick up on discrepancies.

Did I miss anything on this issue? I'll keep my eyes out for the Gulliver line though.

Here's the BDInfo scan for the US release of Arrietty: LINK
Forget The Evil Dead; what George Lucas has done to Star Wars since 1997 is truly "The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Terror".

No clue, as I don't even have a BD drive for my PC. I merely scavenge the data from other websites using Google.

Very nice to see this thread back up

By any chance, does anyone know the schedule for the Japanese releases of Ghibli films?

I meant is there a certain schedule for releasing the films? Like, for example, Criterion has new releases every month.

I think there is, but I'm not familiar with it. You can check the database (Howl's Moving Castle was in November, Poppy will be in June and the next 2 catalogue releases will be Totoro and Fireflies will be in July - a 7-8 month gap maybe ) or wait for someone else to respond.
