Germany I'm about to rant hard. So hard, I'll probably get some on the ceiling.

I picked up a GT50 and figured I'd give 3D a shot. I have seen 3D in theaters a few times and I have regretted it everytime. However, I'm not the type to hate something due to one bad experience, or even five bad experiences, because I know some great things in life take getting used to. For instance, it took 5 trips to the hospital for food poisoning before I finally fell in love with our local Turkish sushi buffet, now I'm a regular customer. (to both the restaurant and the hospital.)

So it was a no brainer to buy a pair of glasses and find some 3D content. In fact, it was right about when I went to the fabulous blu-ray database on this site that I first noticed the eye popping colossus that is the amount of nothingness in the 3D section. I though 3D was this huge undertaking by the industry and the last 5+ years have yielded a butt load of content. Then, when I actually take interest, I find out that the amount of content is lacking immensely and the quality of said content is even worse. Honestly, it's like, and this is by no means an over exaggeration, but it's like thinking you have a million dollars in the bank only to show up one day and find out you don't even have a bank account, let alone any money.

Now your probably saying, "What's this guy smoking?", right? Well the answer to that is some really strong Skywalker OG. But that question is completely off topic and serves no purpose in this discussion whatsoever and now I'm getting paranoid wondering why you want to derail this thread before it's even started?

Anyways, I decided to watch some 3D-BDs (<-copyrighted, I'll sue you.) and I was impressed with the picture compared to what is shown in theaters, but disappointed compared to how flawless 2D looks. Depressing, because you want it to look so good, but completely fine because you know when the technology is mastered it'll look amazing. 3D-BD (I swear to god I'll f***ing sue you.) has a bright future.

But I'm a Criterion guy! I like to watch depressed priests sit in their wintery church and struggle with the existance of god for 2 hours. I don't want to sit there sweating balls while scraps from an explosion fly at my forehead. I want 3D to take me from my living room and give me a table at the buffet scene in Salo. I want to indulge in the aromas and tastes of that magical evening. I don't care about Pixar movies. I know how popular and well loved they are, but how many creatures and items can you watch get lost and then found over the course of 2 hours just so they can learn a lesson about themselves? The toys get lost and rescued 3 times. The cars, a couple of times. A superhero, a fish, a little girl, a rat, a robot, a boy and a pedophile with a balloon fetish. It makes me want to google the location of my main artery so I can end it all. And as far as superheros go, there is only one, Batman. And he doesn't come in 3D.

But, by far, my absolute favorite thing when watching 3D, let's say 3D porn, and the girl takes off her shirt to reveal all her crosstalk. Mmmmm I love a girl with a fantastic set of crosstalk. It makes my eyes roll into the back of my head. Not because of how pleasurable I find it, but because my brain is having a catastrophic failure trying to decode what my eyes are trying desperately to see. For a split second, I feel like I'm falling from a 30 story building in the near dark with no sense of what's up or down. Luckily, I come through every time and proceed to pamper my denial that this technology is anywhere near ready.

First question, what 3D Blu-Ray's do you have? The ones you have might simply have bad 3D. Second, do you notice crosstalk on every movie? If so, it's most likely your display. Also, if you want "depressed priests sitting in their wintery church and struggling with the existance of God", you should have researched the whole 3D thing a little more. I agree that 3D should be used for more than just scraps of metal flying at you, but, well, it IS. Have you seen Hugo? No scraps of 3D metal there. And criterion collection dramas will never be in 3D because there's no market for Harold and Maude 3D (or any other criterion collection release).

And lastly, this was one of the most hilarious rants I've ever read.

How can it be a legend? It just came out. Will give it a try, why not.

For someone who is brand new to 3D, there is quite a bit of content out there. The problem is the long lags between new releases once you have picked up all the existing titles that you want.

I love 3D, I love it in the cinema and I love it at home. I would never watch something in 2D that I could watch in 3D. And if you have a nice set up at home, there are countless titles that will blow you away - Resident Evil, Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2, Drive Angry, Alice In Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, there is a lot of good stuff.

Not sure if you are serious about this, but if so, the GT50 is a 2012 Panasonic plasma model (it's Panasonic's 2nd best model of the year), and is rated by professional reviewers as being up there with the best models of this year from all manufacturers.

There have only been 4 killer applications of 3D that I have seen anyway Avatar, Disney's a Christmas Carol, Transformers Dark of the Moon and Ridley Scott's Prometheus that has only came out 06/08/12. I was under whelmed by the the 3D in Thor, Captain America and most of all The Avengers because I thought Avengers was a natively shot 3D movie but it was only unconverted.

yeah! And I could have easily added to the confusion by going up myself to where The Avengers was filming and taking both stills and videos with my native 3D camera, which even as poor as it is, would still look a hundred times better (for the 3D) then the actual 2D upconverted movie.

At least then, I would have actual good-looking true 3D stills of the movie, with better-looking 3D than the actual movie itself.

Alas, I never went up there during filming.

3D films will get better over time. It's a shame you don't like Pixar, their films are actually pretty complex compared to other animation studios.

Four films that are 3D that actually make you to think are:
-Wim Wender's Pina
-Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams(not the best 3D, but appealing to a "criterion guy" like you or me)
-Martin Scorsese's Hugo
-Ridley Scott's Prometheus

These movies use 3D, use 3D well, and use 3D artistically. They'll have much better 3D than the post-converted superhero movies that have flooded the market, and they carry a lot more substance.

Why do you keep barking? I don't remember ever throwing the bone.

Agreed. List ends there.

@bootman: you'd think bruce's billions would buy him a better pair of 3D glasses.
