With the ablity to be able to negotiate a better price for tv's today like never before, effectively saving you hundreds of dollars, surely with a small percentage of those saving people can afford to buy 6 pairs of active glasses for less than $120 in total, or 10 pairs for less than $200 for that matter. And the prices I have mentioned are the prices here in Australia, where we pay more for most things than the U.S. Ghosting/crosstalk is also much more of an issue with active lcd/led panels, but not so much with active plasma's, projectors and DLP's.

Well, I have the Samsung D7000 59inch 3D Plasma. I got two active glasses and a blury player with the purchase. I picked up another 4 glasses for about $30 each. Therefore, they are much cheaper now.

I do think Panny tv's have more exspensive glasses.

As for a crosstalk, I have seen a little on certain films. Not many, nor a huge distraction because it was very small.

All in all, I love the 3D effect that my Sammy D7000 produces and everyone that have come to my home to check it out was blown away.

I also have 20/20 vision, so I have no problems with the glsses. However, I don't like laying down and watching 3D movies. It just seems weird for some reason.

ACTIVE

6 pairs of glasses for $40 (4 free w/ TV and 2 for $40 on this forum)

I've had probably a dozen people over to watch 3D and everyone was blown away.

I'm with an active LCD-TV for quite some time now. Have watched a huge collection of 3D-BDs over it... not once I've found any ghosting/crosstalk. I've also not tweaked it's settings anyway - I'm yet on the OEM calibration [if it had any that is].

Probably I'm too naive to understand the concept of those viewing deficiencies, or I'm plain lucky!

I have active glasses,I bought four pair's to go with my Samsung telly but later sold on two pair as I never really use the 3d function but the bit's and pieces I saw were good and I didn't have any issues with the glasses themselves.

I bought my TV without the intention of 3D performance, it was just a bonus feature that i never really intended to use mainly because the cost was so damn high for active glasses and offers in a good price range were rare.

I just saw a 3rd part product for active 3D glasses at a fraction of the cost the official panasonic glasses retail and have bought a pair (awaiting delivery). It was mainly the fact that the glasses worked with all active TV forms pretty much accross all the major manufacturers. The reviews also saw no big difference in performance between the manufacturers version and this apart from a bit more weight on the 3rd part product but that's a minor issue compared to being like 50% off even the discounted price.

My first 3D blu-ray will be Avengers in september and i have existing games until then that i will try out when the glasses arrive and look forward to it very much

Can we have a friendly poll here for current 3d member readers?

Active or Passive?

And props to everyone for keeping it friendly so far... I've seen this debate get out of hand on OTHER forums..

I have a - non 3D Panasonic Plasma in the living room for my movie viewing. My kiddos got a Vizio 3D Last Christmas along with a PS3. I was ready to be underwhelmed. So, one night we invited a few people over and I must say the passive Vizio picture was truly AMAZING. We simply pluged it in, turned the movie on and were watching 3D in minutes. Since then we have been playing 3D games and adding to our 3D movie Library. On occasion, I find myself negotiating with the kiddos so I can watch their 3D TV. -

No one has ever complained about picture quality, ghosting, crosstalk, headaches, Etc - they just admire the depth, detail of the picture, and of course the "Pop -Outs"!!

I know not everone enjoys 3D, and I dont think every movie would benefit from 3D. As a matter of fact some movies should be sacred and not be viewed in 3D. But the ones that are intended or benifit from 3D are a WHOLE LOTTA' FUN!!!!!

Glasses-free 3D is autostereoscopic--neither passive nor active glasses required.

but with my passive 3D set, I can sit or lie down at almost any angle and still see the 3D picture perfectly instead of having to view it straight on straight up only and losing the 3D effect whenever I tilt my head like on an active 3D set.

I don't have to worry about recharging the batteries (just immediately put on the glasses whenever I want to watch something in 3D on it).

I don't have to worry about the batteries going dead.

I don't have to worry about their not being any replacement batteries in the future after the batteries go dead if the companies making them no longer make those particular batteries in the future.

I don't have to worry about not getting any replacement glasses for it if the companies no longer make the glasses for them in the future. (which by the way has already happened to several people, not being able to get the active 3D glasses at all for their brand-new active 3D sets because the company no longer makes the 3D glasses for their 3D tv set. and this was on brand-new purchases. not from broken glasses or lost glasses.)

Passive glasses are cheaper. Everyone here could watch my tv with them (without spending thousands of dollars for glasses for everyone) if my tv set was a bigger size than 32 inches. oh well.

I also prefer passive 3D sets rather than active 3D sets.

I even prefer passive 3D rather than the current glasses-free 3D devices.

And so do other people I have shown the two to (passive vs. glasses-free).

With active 3D, the full L and R frames are alternated every 1/120th of a second. With passive 3DTVs (theater projectors are different), the screen is broken up into horizontal lines, and every other line refreshes half of both L and R frames every 1/120th of a second.

The overall effect of both is that your brain sees a full 1080p L and R image every 1/60th of a sec. With active 3D, you see the full 1080p, and your brain has to combine the L and R images. With passive 3D, you see the L and R images, and your brain has to combine the alternating lines to create 1080p in your visual cortex.
Pretty cool info, thanks.

It's great to hear you can get active glasses for 20 bucks each (for what 3DTVs is the question), but cost is still a factor considering passive TV owners can get a pair of passive Real D or Imax glasses each time they visit the theater. The 3D premium at my theater is 2.50 with glasses minus the cost of the movie itself. I have more pairs than I will ever need now. Plus new batteries cost money every 100 hours of use or so.

As long as that's not a big deal to one's wallet, active is just as valid a choice as passive IMO. The next question is, who owns a glasses free 3DTV?
