Hi,
seen this movie 3days back..Story is not appealing-seems like SONY pictures want to establish a new hero!!
3D was also not impressive. No pop-outs or could not compare depth with other movies like Final destination,Journey 2 etc...Infact i felt Journey 2 had better 3D than this.(my opinion)

I'm hearing so many different opinions on this movie. Love, like, and hate. I can't wait to see it next Tuesday and judge for myself, once and for all.

That's cool I'm perfectly fine with that kind of 3D if you can still see the volume I've encountered that effect before and am really pleased and curious how you can still get the volume even with lower levels of 3D

If the shot is what I think it is, it's going to look gorgeous haha!

Congratulations Andrew Garfield and Marc Webb in turning Peter Parker/Spider Man into a total D-Bag.
Seriously betrayed the ideals of what made Parker/Spidey tick.
We couldn't play cheaper programing if we tried, and believe me WE TRIED.

I'm looking forward to buying this too. But I think with the heights and all you will be really missing out on a lot of it's impact not viewing it on the huge theater screen for the first time.

I'm going in a couple hours. I was tempted to go to the midnight showing last night, but there is someone who wants to go with me today so I waited.
I'm not too concerned about the mixed reviews on the 3D. The 3D trailer looked awesome to me. And even if they do use the 3D more conservatively, as was done with Prometheus, it should still look really good.

I see people say this is Sony? From what I've seen, they have generally been a little on the conservative side. With the exception of Open Season of course.

Sounds like there is a few pop outs, we'll have to see.

The depth was okay from beginning to end and the pop-outs definitely stood out towards the end. There were a lot of pop-out moments I thought, especially of spidey. Great movie too.

Just got back from it. Loved it. The movie was really good, and so was the 3D. True, the depth was very conservative at the start. And that had me a little worried. But like was mentioned, once the good stuff kicks in the 3D is great. It really stands out when he takes that first leap off a building. Whoa.

And yes, there are some pop outs. I blinked several times because of something flying at my face. (Not really a spoiler here.) --> There is a cool shot that follows Spidey from above. And several times as he reaches the top of his swinging arch he comes out of the screen a bit. It looked pretty cool. And that last shot at the end...

Too bad for those who choose the 2D version.

Just got back from watching the masked vigilante known as Spider-Man! They've found my weakness...it's IMAX 3D.

The movie was awesome! The characters were more likable than those in the Sam Raimi trilogy, especially Spider-Man. About half of the movie was a re-telling of his superhero origin, but Marc Webb did it better. I connected emotionally with the story much more than I had anticipated. The were many humorous moments, and the action sequences and web-slinging bits were just off-the-charts cool. It's a very well-rounded movie, and exactly the sort of film that I love to see in 3D.

It was easy to tell that the IMAX cut is the definitive 3D version. The ~15 minutes of 1.90:1 are just visually stunning and enveloping. If you've seen the end of 3D trailer and been frustrated by the huge window violation created by the round drum falling off the tower, cheer up. In 1.90:1, it becomes a pretty decent pop-out.

The majority of the movie uses too safe, too conservative 3D, filmed with 2D conventions and an overuse of depth of focus. Expect a lazy depth script with 2D dialogue and 3D action sequences. Filming with 3D cameras provided perfect separation between objects, but they needed to increase interaxial distance to achieve realistic-looking proportions for more of the scenes. However, when they do crank up the 3D, it is on! The 3D stereography/cinematography is great during Spider-Man moments, especially toward the end. The POV web-slinging/launching and the sense of height looking down over the Manhattan skyline are just perfect. The Spider-Man/Lizard battles look incredible as well. Webb got the depth right for most action scenes, and he used floating particles for a great 3D effect in the final battle.

There were plenty of pop-outs to satisfy my taste in 3D (Some of them likely worked better in 1.90:1.). Pop-out count:
[Show spoiler] A hologram animation takes place in theater space, a few objects get hurled at the viewer, a car dangles out of the screen, a hand grabs at the viewer, and Spidey web-slings toward the viewer and then falls back into the screen (my favorite). There is a bit of a tease pop-out before the credits roll too.
Overall, I had so much fun watching this movie. I think it's a tie with Prometheus as my favorite for 2012.

Movie - 5/5
Stereography - 3.5/5
Depth - 3.5/5
Pop-out - 4.5/5
Dimensionality - 4.5/5

P.S. Stay for about 30 seconds after the initial credits for a hint at a sequel.

i am delighted to hear there is pop outs in this one. Nice job Marc Webb. Hopefully Michael Bay and all the other "depth" 3D morons will take notice 3D should have both things not just depth what is the point in 3D anyway if the movie only have depth. Good to know Spidey is not one of those

though its weird that sjrenjith say there is no pop outs while other say there is a great deal of them

there are a few pop-outs, and the part with holograms is completely out of the screen for what seemed like 5-10 seconds or so. the depth could have been a lot stronger the whole way through too, it seemed similar if not shallower than the hobbit trailer for the most part. however what was slightly weird was that in my "digital IMAX" (not the super high vertical old school type), when the footage went to 1.9:1, the picture was in fact window-boxed, meaning there were black bars on the side that weren't there for most of the movie. the image did go from the top to the bottom of the screen but it is slightly a trade-off, and to be honest i'd rather have it stay wide. i don't know if all the digital imax screen sizes are different but it was a bit weird. for the blu-ray release if they use the imax cut then i seriously doubt it'll be window-boxed.

As far as the 3D:
Boring 3D during dialog story shots, great 3D for action scenes. I hate when they do that. It should ALL be great 3D: "3D storytelling" as they call it, stinks. Oh well.

This is a good point. Iron Man is an arrogant hero. Parker is down to earth in comparison.

Yes, OPEN SEASON 3D rules. Very strong 3D throughout the entire movie, not just action scenes.

Agreed for when they downplay the 3D just because people are talking. That is the biggest waste of having the ability to show great 3D as in Hugo 3D, and not using it. What a waste of 3D opportunity. All of it should be equally strong 3D. Even the boring shots. It would make them that much more interesting, but no...

Yeah, the dialog scenes looked pretty flat. The action scenes, much better in 3D.

It's too bad they think this is a good idea. "Let's flatten most of the movie except for the 'good parts', they deserve better 3D" is what they're essentially saying, with the excuse "But it makes the 3D that more exciting when it finally shows up!"

Otherwise, the 3D during the action is solid, and SpiderMan moves more realistically than in the original trilogy.

Honestly, I enjoyed the movie so much, it was pretty easy to forgive the 2D-ish dialogue scenes. Weakish native 3D isn't the worst thing in the world. It was basically just a huge bonus when they poured it on at the end. Hopefully, more filmmakers start learning how to make fully immersive 3D soon though and take the theater experience to the next level.

For trailers I saw:

2D:
The Bourne Legacy
The Watch (Very funny)
The Dark Knight Rises

3D:
Frankenweenie
Resident Evil: Retribution - Trailer #2 (Looks awesome! Very good 3D. Paul Anderson knows his stuff.)

The conversion work on Frankenweenie is outstanding isn't it? With the abstract sets and puppets they really can push the 3D conversion process. Looking forward to Resident Evil, I'm a geek for Milla Jovovich kicking ass.
For sure. I love the re-imagining of Spider-Man and would definitely want Webb back as a director. Since he's a fan of shooting native and showed some flashes of really great 3D creativity, I'd have high hopes again for the 3D in a sequel.

Yeah, Frankenweenie's trailer looks great in IMAX. I've seen it twice at that theater now. It seriously feels like it's raining in the room with you, and they bring the characters right in front of you. The conversion work is outstanding too. They're making the characters very round looking, and there's no way anyone could tell it was a conversion just based off sight alone.

Very excited for RE:Retribution. I'm a huge fan of the video game series, the CGI movies, the live-action...you name it. Milla is great too. Can't wait to go back and see that one in IMAX in September.
