I have no idea why I am drawn to this movie either. Maybe it because I know the hell it went through. I don't know.................I really don't know.
I should have it by tomorrow though. Looking forward to watching for the first time in a long long time. |

I watched this last night, and it was worse than I remembered it.

I saw this film in theaters and disliked it quite a bit. Just can't get over how weird it is and how "one minute normal the next a crazy goofball" Val Kilmers character was.
Sucks because before seeing it I was so hyped about it. Major letdown. |

This film is such a mess! If you're looking for a better version of he story, the Burt Lancaster one from the 70's is no classic, but it's very enjoyable. The best is the 30's version -- Island Of Lost Souls. Dark and creepy, especially for a film that old. It's easily the best version ever filmed.

The PQ is just decent. It's not DNR riddled -- there's some noise in various shots -- but IMO it's probably got something to do with the film itself and how it was shot. I remember seeing it in theaters and it wasn't the greatest looking film visually.
The movie is just so bad -- not in a good way, though the few scenes when Kilmer goes nutty and makes fun of Brando (stuff that had to have been improvised given all the reports of Kilmer being an ass on the set) are amusing. The effects are less than stellar and date the film badly too. I agree with the above poster that the film is actually worse than I remember it being. As charlieray wrote above, even the '77 version is much better (and obviously so is the '30s version). The '77 version is on a region free Aussie disc and looks fine.
