I'm thinking about buying floor standing speakers for my bedroom HT sound system. I sit about 4-5 ft away from my 32 inch LCD and want something that sounds good from that distance. If I do get floor standing speakers then I can't use a subwoofer because I won't have space for one, at least not in a decent spot unless I get rid of my bed, so I want something that can play down to 40Hz or less and these Polk's are spec'd to go down to 35 Hz. I also don't want it to be an eyesore in my bedroom. I'll only consider these speakers if I can get away without using a subwoofer. I have a Yamaha RX-V667 receiver that has a discrete amplifier providing 90 watts to 7 channels at 8-ohms. Remember, I will be sitting fairly close to the speakers since my LCD since it's only 32 inches.

So basically you want a pair of speakers capable of trowing a decent bass since you don't have room for a sub . If you are thinking for a music listening that can do the job but you want something for movie viewing ? There i say ... no you will really need a sub , and that would really be my advise beside not buying the TSi and instead getting the monitor 50 and get a sub like the HSU STF-1 . |

those speakers wont go to 35 hz with any kind of accuracy or true umph, probably closer to 50 hz. You would be better off with a very good pair of bookshelfs that will have tighter more accurate mid-bass from 60 hz up, and a small subwoofer that can play down to 30 hz or so.
here is what i would suggest http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...05/energy-rc10 http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-1.html or get the 2.1 setup here http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/value1pkg.html

I got rid of my pair of Polk M10's because I though they lacked bass without a subwoofer and I wanted deep bass. I'm already using my Yamaha SP1800BL speakers with the subwoofer in a 3.1 sound configuration as it's the only way I can use my subwoofer while keeping my subwoofer in a decent spot which is right next to my TV stand and close to my speakers to minimize subwoofer localization. However sometimes the subwoofer is too dominant and boomy with these little speakers even though I get the deeper bass. It actually looks pretty compact and nice for a bedroom system. I mainly watch TV shows and movies and gaming. I sometimes play music, but that's just to test out my sound settings on my receiver more than just listening for enjoyment. I guess if I need a subwoofer to hear the lower frequencies in gaming and movies even with the TSI 300's then I guess I'll just wait until I have my own place and then get a real good setup for a living room and just stick with my Yamaha SP1800BL speakers.

I have these speakers. They produce very good sound but if you want bass get the TSI400's. I on the other hand use the 300's with an Outlaw sub. Combined its great sound in my opinion. I know there's better but until I get my Paradigms I'll stick with these, and I would put the Polks above those energy's any given day when it comes to clarity.

He's better off with the polk's. They're better speakers and when he moves they'll be better suited for a home. Those Elementals are a secondary option.

I would love to know why he would be better with the polks. What makes them better? What have you compared them to, and what gear was it on?

I think I might go with the Pioneer floorstanding speakers I saw at Best Buy instead of the Polk TSI 500's. I think that the Pioneer ones would look nicer in my TV area with a 32 inch LCD in my bedroom. I would really hate my LCD to look dwarfed next to huge speakers.

actually I heard the pioneer floorstanders and the Polks and the Klipsch all at the same time, the pioneers were the best speaker in the room. they have almost no bass, but they have amazing mid-range and nice smooth highs. the klipsch had the best bass, but those Pioneers were very good considering the price.

If you're talking about the Pioneer FS51 towers, I agree they are better sounding with more neutral miss then the Polks (and I own Polks). The Pioneers are short though and some owners use a small stand to bump them up as they have a fairly big drop off on the off-axis vertical response so you want to stay pretty on-axis with the tweeter. The Pioneers are also pretty ugly IMO. As several have already suggested, if you the Polks, get the Monitor Series II instead as they're the same acoustic design, just mildly difference aesthetics and the Monitors are MUCH lower priced. As for Monitor model, I wouldn't suggest the Monitor 70/Tsi500 as they're far too big in a small room (I have these, good bass, but biiig). The Monitor 50/Tsi300 lack bass. Instead, of the Monitor/Tsi line, I'd recommend the Monitor 60/Tsi400. Its considerably more compact than the M70/Tsi500 but offer quite good bass, not too far off from its larger brother.
I'd still recommend a small sub though to really fill in the low end with authority. I run the Monitor 60s with a very small Energy/Mirage 9" cube sub which works great for music and is so tiny, it takes very little space. If you don't NEED a tower though, I'd seriously consider a pair of standmount speakers on stands with a small sub. Look at the Energy RC10s, can be had for $250 on newegg. Or the DefTech StudioMoitor 350s for $240 from newegg (I'm considering these too since I can get them for even less). They use a passive radiator instead of port which offers some advantages. |

As a Polk fan, I would recommend staying away from their Monitor/TSi speakers. When you move up to their RTi and LSi lineup, things get interesting. Their RTi6's are nice little speakers and will provide better quality bass than any speaker in the Monitor line save for maybe the Monitor 70.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290252 If you need a subwoofer, there's a gentleman on Ebay selling Definitive Technology ProSub 100TL's for only $115 with free shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Definitive-T...item2a00816f1f If I didn't just buy my Def Tech PF15, this is the sub I would have. I had the ProSub200TL at one point and it was incredible. And for $115, there's simply nothing better.
