Smile 'Woody Allen Collection' - Coming soon!

After Marilyn Monroe,Alfred Hitchcock,James Bond...now it's Woody Allen turn to shine with a essential movie collection.

I just learned (from my Spanish friends),that Fox/MGM plans to launch a box set of Allen's films with ... ....20 (!) movies included, later this year!

Release date for Spain set is October 17th;no info ATM on possible US date and release, though (i dare to predict late Fall/early Winter release)

Note : Folks, please take this with a grain of salt.Although this sources are usually very accurate (especially about Fox/MGM catalogue output),I don't want to deceive anyone.

Titles that will likely be included (19 MGM + 1 Fox)

Alice
Annie Hall
Another Woman
Bananas
Broadway Danny Rose
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Everything You wanted to Know About Sex But Were Too Afraid To Ask
Hannah and Her Sisters
Interiors
Love and Death
Manhattan
Melinda and Melinda
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Radio Days
September
Shadows and Fog
Sleeper
Stardust Memories
Zelig

I saw the DVD set on Amazon U.K. listed as coming in July, but I was really hoping that there would be a blu-ray version, too. Love it!!

Worth a first day purchase for me, even if the woodman does no commentary.

I hope they redo Annie Hall. I've held off on buying it because of the audio-sync glitch.

That'd be great. Really, probably better even than the Bond, Hitchock or Monroe collections.

Ordered from Spain. 75 euros shipped, $4.75 per film. Also saw they are releasing 3 different 3 movie boxes on BD for those that want certain titles. Then I saw Germany and France as well as U.K. have the 20 DVD set. Hoping the U.S. gets this, too.

Mother****er. Why is it that everything I love is being released in expensive boxed sets this year? Is Blu-ray trying to kill me?!

I would think that Take the Money and Run would be more likely than Melinda and Melinda. (At least I hope so)
Awesome news if it's true. I've been thinking about just such a set lately, but thought they would be more likely to do three sets (like the DVD's).

This is the same list as the DVD box set. Not sure why it's not included since they're all UA/MGM titles.

Between this and the import BD's I'll have all but these 6 of his directed titles on BD.

Take the Money and Run
Husbands and Wives
Manhattan Murder Mystery
Deconstructing Harry
Sweet and Lowdown
Anything Else

Who has the rights to Take The Money and Run? For some reason, that's a hard Allen movie to find.

Frankly, and I know I'm going to Hell for this, I'm not much of an Allen fan. Sleeper is good and Annie Hall has some funny moments, but I have a hard time "getting the joke". That and my family absolutely detests the man for his personal life, so good luck getting anyone to sit and watch the movies with me.

If we can get an individual release for Sleeper, I'll take that, Manhattan and Annie Hall and be happy. But more power to everyone who loves his work. Just not really my cuppa.

Should be MGM. Unfortunately their DVD is full screen. There's an older Anchor Bay DVD that's properly widescreen but has been OOP for a very long time (and might have been non-anamorphic IIRC).

In any case, MGM should have rights to 20 Allen films in the US: the ones listed above sans Melinda and Melinda, but with Take the Money and Run. But maybe the MGM rights to Take the Money and Run lapsed and are now with someone else, or perhaps they simply do not have rights outside the US, so the Spain box would be 20 titles while the US box is 21.

Fox just has Melinda and Melinda.

The others are as follows:

Disney

Don't Drink the Water (TV Movie)
New York Stories (segment only) (available on Blu via Mill Creek)

DreamWorks (would be distributed via Paramount)

Anything Else
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion
Hollywood Ending
Match Point
Small Time Crooks

Image

What's Up, Tiger Lily?

Miramax (would be distributed by Lionsgate or Echo Bridge)

Bullets Over Broadway
Celebrity
Everyone Says I Love You
Mighty Aphrodite

Sony

Husbands and Wives
Manhattan Murder Mystery
Midnight in Paris (available on Blu)
Sweet and Lowdown
Whatever Works (available on Blu)
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (available on Blu)

Universal

Scoop

Warner (via New Line folding-in)

Deconstructing Harry

Weinstein Company (currently distributed by Anchor Bay)

Cassandra's Dream
Vicky Christina Barcelona (available on Blu)

What a collection! This will make us so much closer to Woody Allen complete on blu-ray.

I hope we'll see Play it again, Sam and The Front on Blu-Ray soon as well.
