‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Will Likely Be Marvel’s Second 2014 Movie

Though Marvel was likely planning to unveil one or both of its “unannounced films in development” at the upcoming Comic-Con panel, it appears the cat may have been let out of the bag. We previously learned that one of Marvel’s two in-development mystery films might be Black Panther, and now it looks like that “Untitled Marvel Film” slated for release in 2014 could be none other than Guardians of the Galaxy. First, as a refresher, here’s Marvel’s “Phase Two” release slate as it stands now:

Iron Man 3 – May 3rd, 2013
Thor 2 – November 15th, 2013
Captain America 2 – April 4th, 2014
Untitled Marvel Movie - May 16th, 2014

So Latino Review is reporting that Guardians of the Galaxy will be announced as Marvel’s 2014 release not titled Captain America 2 at Comic-Con. They’ve been pretty solid on Marvel news in the past so we’re inclined to believe this is true. Moreover, Guardians of the Galaxy has come up multiple times in the past, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been talking about doing a “big space epic” since last year.

For those unfamiliar with Guardians of the Galaxy, the comic first appeared in 1969 and was resurrected in 2008. The story centers on a group of alien beings in the 31st century who are each the last of their kind. They eventually travel back in time and interact with 20th century Marvel characters, which is probably how they’ll fit within the Marvel cinematic universe (with it being the 21st century instead of the 20th).

Latino Review adds that Thanos—the big villain spotted in the tag for The Avengers—will be a character in the Guardians of the Galaxy, the film will lead directly into The Avengers 2, and the script is apparently, “incredible.” As the pic has yet to be officially announced, we don’t yet know who exactly wrote said script. However, it was obvious from The Avengers tag that Thanos would probably figure into The Avengers 2, so one assumes he’ll be a major player in at least the third act of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie to necessitate getting the whole gang back together for The Avengers 2. He’s one bad dude.

It’s important to remember that this hasn’t been officially confirmed, but for those that have been following Marvel Studios closely over the past few years a Guardians of the Galaxy movie on the docket certainly isn’t a shock. Thor proved that audiences were willing to follow these superhero characters into the realm of the fantastical, and The Avengers essentially sealed the deal. I’m not familiar enough with the comics to start speculating on which characters we’d see in the film, but I’m eager to see what kind of behind-the-scenes team Marvel chooses to put Guardians of the Galaxy together.

We’ll have firm word and a much clearer picture of Marvel’s “Phase Two” slate after the studio’s Comic-Con panel in two weeks, but until then it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy just may be hitting theaters on May 16th, 2014.

I truly think a GotG film would be Marvel's first FLOP.
While some of their films have featured lesser-known characters (like Iron Man), GotG is almost completely unknown outside of hardcore comics people, and they are a little more out-there (not to mention silly-looking).

If Marvel does proceed with a film based on this, they certainly should not try to position it as a major blockbuster release, because it won't be. On the contrary, I would think it will not do well at all.

I would much rather see a Black Panther, Doc Strange, Invaders, Power man and Iron Fist, and Shang-chi movie. I somewhat agree with the earlier post of the GoG. Not that I'm against something new but I would way more pumped to see the other characters.

It's just noise at this point as i'm getting really tired of Disney/Marvel I don't need more than 1 marvel film every 2-3 years. But Dismey is doing what it does best and is shoving Marvel down our throats until they over saturate the market. Besides IM3 I can't say I care about anything Marvel. Amd this is coming from somebody who generally enjoys Marvel's efforts.

The rumor mill claims that the futuristic, alien superhero team known as the Guardians of the Galaxy will be revealed at next month's San Diego Comic-Con as Marvel Studios' secretive 2014 release.

The news -- coming just days after it was learned Marvel had registered 11 new trademarks for Guardians of the Galaxy -- is via Latino-Review, who also claim that Thanos (SPOILER: He was briefly seen at the end of The Avengers) will be in it and the events of the movie will lead up to The Avengers 2. The site's source calls the script for Guardians of the Galaxy "incredible," and that the film will most likely borrow from "The Thanos Imperative" storyline.

The site adds fans should "(expect) Nova. There’s got to be a reason that Nova keeps showing up in stuff like Disney’s Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s AvX. He’s not a Guardian per se, but he’s the most recognizable Marvel space character to the all-important 'we’re young and buy toys' demographic."

The Guardians of the Galaxy first appeared in their own title in 1969, with their most recent incarnation starting in 2008. Their current roster includes Star-Lord, Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Mantis. They recently appeared in an episode of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

It should be noted, however, that Latino-Review also recently reported that Black Panther was Marvel's next standalone movie after Captain America 2, which has already been officially announced for a 2014 release. Whatever the case may be, we'll hopefully know come Comic-Con just what Marvel has in store for 2014. The studio announced yesterday that they'll be there to hype Iron Man 3 at Hall H on Saturday, July 14 from 6:00– 7:00pm.

It was Feige's idea for two movies a year, not Disney's. Disney's studio is in a bad rut right now. They're more focused on fixing their studio then forcing marvel to make movies. Not to mention all the problems they're having with Lone Ranger. Marvel is being left alone. Disney isn't forcing anything. This isn't Eisner's regime anymore.

I see Disney make bad decision after bad decision and the Marvel franchises have easy money written all over them. Disney animation is also sticking its hand into the honey pot. With how much Disney stands to gain with the Marvel properties no way are they sitting on the sidelines.

I would be infinity more interested if a real effort was put into these films but its pretty clear they are only aiming for vanilla wide appeal with these films. and if you try something new, you're out (Who was directing Thor 2?) Even as fun as Avengers was (I saw it twice, which is rare for me) it was a paper thin story with little weight to it made to appeal to the widest demo possible. And perhaps thats the real problem with the next gen of Marvel/Disney's slate, after seeing Avengers why do I care about Thor or even Capt. America by themselves? They haven't given me any reason to care.

And now more characters? Marvel had a great thing going on, but no thank you. Show me something creatively different and taking some real risks and then we'll talk. I feel especially under the Disney banner these are less like films and more like products.

I knew the success of the Avengers would open the floodgates for terrible superhero team-up movies. This idea sounds horrible and it will bomb harder
than Howard the Duck. And it deserves, too.

Makes perfect sense. The Avengers alone couldnt beat Thanos. If he gets the Gauntlet, you need cosmic entities to have a hope at beating him. Adam Warlock and Dr. Strange (if hes introduced soon) vs Thanos would give them a fighting chance.

The talk of this getting made has been going on for over a year now. The movie can be really good and will probably be great if it gets made.

The reason to do Guardians is in the post. To introduce Thanos. Marvel has been talking about making this since before Thor came out. They've been laying the groundwork to go cosmic for a bit now. I don't see why they shouldn't do it, honestly. It would be different then your stereotypical superhero movie, which I think is a good thing. I don't see the problem in it.

Well, Lasseter and Disney didn't come up with 'Big Hero 6' either. Apparently, Don Hall pitched the idea to him and had begun storyboarding it, and Lasseter liked it so much he greenlit it. This isn't about Disney sticking their hand in the honey pot anymore. Marvel is allowed to do their own thing, Marvel backs them. Could Disney have some say? Yes. But ultimately, much like Pixar, Marvel Studios is their own separate entity that gets to do their own thing. I see nothing wrong with that at all. If you guys aren't looking forward to further Marvel movies, ok, cool. I get it. That's your thing. I can see you guys think it might be too much. But I love what Marvel is doing, and I think it's great their going big. I don't think two movies a year is too much to ask at all. I can't wait to see what they turn out the next few years until 'Avengers 2'. To each their own. I just get tired of the "Disney is ruining everything!" thing. That's not aimed at you, Snicket. That is just something I've gotten tired of hearing over the years.

Update: Dave here. Reports have Disney and Marvel zeroing in Guardians of the Galaxy, which would take precedence over Black Panther. Variety sources confirm that Disney and Marvel are pursuing a Guardians of the Galaxy feature, though Marvel had no comment. Look for the upcoming Comic-Con presentation to spotlight Iron Man 3, but also touch on how the studios plan to introduce these new characters to the masses. Variety went on to say that Disney recently secured trademark rights to the picture and its characters for consumer products. They also report that Disney screenwriting alumna, Nicole Perlman, penned the draft that the studio is excited about. Other projects in the pipeline include Dr. Strange, The Inhumans, Ant-Man and Black Panther.

Doing a Black Panther movie would like be doing another Elektra or Ghost Rider film. He's just an unimportant character for the plans that Marvel has. And Black Panther doesnt have a good villain.

For financial reasons, any upcoming Marvel movie should be one of those connecter films, unless it's some hugely popular characters like Spiderman and Xmen. Ant Man and dr. Strange are good movies to make cuz they connect to the avengers. Black Panther is just mehhh.
