I couldn't wait to see this after reading the synopsis and seeing who was cast but once that first trailer hit... let's just say my enthusiasm was quickly deflated. I ended up seeing it anyway and while it wasn't what I would want for a film version of the source material, it was just an okay film.

I rather enjoyed it. It was a departure from the source, sure. But I was surprised by how much I liked it. Looking forward to watching it again.

I recently watched Mars Attacks! again and thought there was the tone Dark Shadows should have went for. It was more over the top soap opera than his version of Dark Shadows. It is ok to watch but honestly I can't imagine watching it more than once or twice. It is missing any real oomph IMO.

I mean so many scenes work only once and watching them a second time it just feels tiring to make it to the finish...
[Show spoiler]The Carpenters bit, and also that campfire scene to name a few.
I don't mean to bash the film so much, but it deserved a better treatment. - Doesn't mean I won't buy it... but it better have worthwhile extras.
Stop the Replacing of original Studio Opening / Closing logos! These are becoming endangered and should be kept intact. They are part of film history.

One of the few day 1 buys from summer films. Unlike many other people I enjoyed it.

I'm more of an Eva Green fan myself.

Will rent this for sure and based on that will I buy. Had a few buddies see this and they were not too impressed.

I never got a chance to see this in theaters, but I was in the group that thought the idea and the casting sounded horrible, until I saw the trailer, and then it made me really excited. I'll probably end up blind-buying this when I can find it for $20.

Japan Special Edition Release (about $54 plus shipping though right now)
[Show spoiler]

There's also a France Steelbook
[Show spoiler]

Though the film itself had so much potential with this cast, it sadly missed the mark overall...kinda teetering in tone and missing out on developmental plot opportunites and some darker gothic angst. I'm hoping for a lot of deleted extras. But the film has enough saving grace for me in Johnny's performance, music and amazing production design that I will buy it.
Fun Fact: I am the same height ( 5'1'') as Carrie Fisher, Jean Harlow, Holly Hunter, Christina Ricci, Ellen Page, Emilie De Ravin, Anna Kendrick, Kristen Bell...yes great things do come in small packages :)

I think I might get this one. It's one of my "so bad, it's good titles," and my mom said she enjoyed it as well. I can't watch high fullutent foreign arthouse films all the time .

Loved this film. It was a fresh take on an over-the-top classic soap opera. I loved how this film spoofed itself, just like THE BRADY BUNCH movie did with their tv show.

I saw this as satire and enjoyed it.

Yea, day one for me. It was something of an aloof film, but I enjoyed Depp's and Green's characters. I loved how Depp's character was always saying sorry before he killed people. He was genuinely remorseful and polite about it. Funny. Green's character was deliciously evil.

Actually, the film received mixed reviews. Most of them say that it didn't stay true to the soap opera. The thing is, Burton wasn't planning on remaking the series. He wanted to take the Barnabas storyline, and create something totally new out of it. Over the top, stylish, campy. A lot of critics failed to get that. They wanted something from their childhood.

I also saw it as a satire. It spoofed the campy nature of the soap opera. Which is the reason why Depp 'overacted' (as one critic put it). Barnabas was meant to be arrogant (even though he is also polite). I personally LOVED the film, and it will be a day one for me. The soundtrack is amazing, the score is ok (definitely a signature Elfman score). I hope I can still catch it at a theater near me that's still playing it! It better last until at least this Saturday.

How can you set a movie in the 70's and NOT be a bit campy? LOL.
