Default Best PC speakers to buy?

I was thinking about buying some new speakers for my PC (for watching blu-rays/movies mainly, but also possibly for music and video games)

I'm not sure if I should get 2.1 or 5.1 speakers. Since I'm only in a small room, i don't know if I should get 5.1

I was thinking of maybe getting these:
http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/ipod-...-system/644808

They seem like good quality speakers, and apparently have good reviews.

But since I don't know too much about speakers, I'd like to know what you guys think, or if you recommend a different set of PC speakers (whether it be 2.1 or 5.1, I'm open to both). Also price range isn't too much of an issue.

Thanks

audioengine makes some of the better computer speakers out there for the money, I think they are the A2 or A5+.

Unless you want to get into high end audio speakers, then you could look into the Dynaudio Focus 110A, they are about $2200.
Video: Panasonic 55" P55ST50, Oppo BDP-103
Amplification: Integra DTR-40.2, Naim Nait 5i-2 Integrated, Jolida FX Tube DAC
Speakers: Dynaudio Focus 160s, Excite X22 Center, DM 2/6
Subwoofer:
eD A2-300, Auralex Subriser

Turntable: Pro-Ject Debut III, Sumiko Pearl Cart, Bellari VP130 Tube phono
Bedroom: Samsung LNT-4061 40" LCD, Sony BDP-360, XBox 360
Girls room: Vizio 32" VX32L, Sony Upconverting DVD player

+1. I own this system, and would also recommend it. If possible get this system rather than the new model which is the Z906.

I'll second the idea that powered studio monitors make great computer speakers.

In addition to the KRK's, I would check out the Behringer Truth B3030A.

It is internally bi-amplified 50 watts RMS for the low frequency 6.5 inch Kevlar driver, 25 watts RMS for the ribbon tweeter, 140 watt peak combined. Dude, a self powered speaker with a dang ribbon tweeter for just under 200 bucks... sweet.

About 197 bucks at sweetwater.com right now. That's a solid value, you'd have to invest an exponentially greater amount to beat it in terms of fidelity.

+1. I also own these. I've had these for 5 years now and they are damn good for the price.
BTW can I buy a Bat Cowl or should I just send you some boxed mac and cheese and some canned beans and we call it even?

I was thinking about getting some home theatre speakers and receiver instead, for dat lossless TrueHD and Master Audio audio

My room is quite small so I was thinking of getting something smallish, so something like these perhaps http://www.harveynorman.com.au/yamah...nd-system.html

But I'm a bit of an audio noob so I'm not sure if those ones are good or whatever, so I am open to suggestions. I'd like to keep the price under $700 if possible, something that would suit a small bedroom.

Also a PC related question, if I do go for the receiver+speaker route, would it just be as simple as plugging the receiver to my computers motherboard via HDMI? like you would a TV home theatre?

Thanks

If your room is really quite small, then consider this:

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/speake...er-system-Z906

Like the two systems you wrote about, it is only 500 watts and the speakers are very small. But at least it isn't trying to pretend to be a full sized receiver!

Ah ha, someone mentioned before me. The problem with the Z906 as I understand it is a high rate of lemons. But if you don't get a lemon you'll be alright.

The real downside of both versions is neither offers any sort of midnight mode (compression mode) for bringing dialogue and explosions closer into line with each other.

What do you mean? Why does the size of a receiver matter?

If you don't need surround sound, you can get terrific 2.1 speakers for not a lot of money. Audioengine makes fabulous stuff, and comes with a 30-day money back guarantee. I'd suggest their A5+, and you could always tack on their sub later if you wanted. Or NHT's stuff. You'll get a lot better sound quality if you're investing in two or three speakers than six. Good luck with whatever direction you go!

Sorry I should have been more clear. I meant to merely point out that the Logitech is very honest in its form factor - it has a very small control box. Small because it is just an amplifier and the decoding circuitry. It isn't trying to give buyers the impression it is a full fledged receiver by using a breadbox-sized form. I like that honesty.

I believe the amp is built into the LFE unit, thus the heatsink fins. The control panel takes care of the decoding etc.
