Wow WB will be releasing Bonfire of the Vanities and NOT FEMME FATALE first to blu... kind of surprised... Unless maybe that title will also be planned for release this winter also.

Bonfire is possibly the one film by De Palma I've never seen.... is it as bad as some say it is... or decent viewing on a rainy afternoon?

Mainly, I just want to get rid of the snapper case the DVD was included in. I've never seen Bonfire Of The Vanities, primarilly because I'd be interested in reading the novel first, because most reviews of the movie savaged it because it was a bad adaptation of the book.

For a brief period of time around when Femme Fatale was released on DVD Hollywood video carried a lot of Warner titles in reg plastic keep cases Femme Fatale was one and I have the keep case! Another title I have in the keep case is the Kid Stays in the Picture documentary that was I believe another Wb snapper release elsewhere.

Well from a cinematographic perspective Bonfire is a triumph, and the current dvd looks like garbage with the framing actually misaligned on the sides, so I welcome this. I never really thought it was a bad movie, a missed opportunity due to some poor casting choices and book to film changes that were obviously made to make it more appealing to the masses (which of course backfired), but it does have some funny scenes and like I said the Vilmos Zsigmond cinematrogaphy is amazing.

If you have not read the book, it might be worth a rental, but definitely don't blind buy it. |

The Bonfire Of the Vanities was shot SUPER 35 which I normally the composition can be the same between standard frame to scope... but this has always been released 1.85:1 Really wish if it were De Palma's preference that it be released in 2.35:1Anyone have any thoughts on the aspect ratio it should be shown at 1.85:1 / 2.35:1 ? Only curious becuase I heard discussion on this years ago.

I'm not sure about the true aspect ratio, IMDB says 1.85 : 1. I do know that the dvd looks terrible, with part of the picture from one side of the frame actually showing up on the other side for the entire film. You can actually see where the film frame ends on one side of the image.

Just to reiterate what has been said, if you read the book and are a fan of the book, do not see the movie. If you're like and have never read the book then by all means give this a rent. Most people I've talked to have seen the movie and read the book almost universally hate the movie adaptation.
Personally, I've always felt Bonafire was an underappreciated masterpiece (Melanie Griffith notwithstanding). It's a funny, biting social commentary on society and it's coverage by the media and still resonant even, what 20 + years later. I'm definitely going to pick this up. |
